I will name 10 civil war campaigns and then I ask you to recommend a book on that campaign. Do as many or as few of the 10 as you like. Also, the book doesn't have to cover the entire campaign; it can be just one small portion of it. I will also give my recommendations: The 1862 Federal Penetration up the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers (February 1862 - June 1862): Shiloh and the Western Campaign of 1862 by Edward Cunningham Jackson's Valley Campaign (March 1862 - June 1862): Stonewall in the Valley: Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Spring 1862 by Robert G. Tanner The Peninsula Campaign (March 1862 - July 1862): Extraordinary Circumstances: The Seven Days Battles by Brian K. Burton The Northern Virginia Campaign (August 1862): Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain by Robert K. Krick The Maryland Campaign (September 1862): Taken at the Flood: Robert E. Lee and Confederate Strategy in the Maryland Campaign of 1862 by Joseph L. Harsh The Vicksburg Campaign (December 1862 - July 1863): Ninety-Eight Days: A Geographer's View of the Vicksburg Campaign by Warren E. Grabau The Gettysburg Campaign (June 1863 - July 1863): Retreat from Gettysburg: Lee, Logistics, and the Pennsylvania Campaign by Kent Masterson Brown The Overland Campaign (May 1864 - June 1864): To the North Anna River: Grant and Lee, May 13-25, 1864 by Gordon C. Rhea The Atlanta Campaign (May 1864 - September 1864): The Campaign for Atlanta by William R. Scaife The Carolinas Campaign (February 1865 - March 1865): Last Stand in the Carolinas: The Battle of Bentonville by Mark L. Hal The 1862 Federal Penetration up the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers (February 1862 - June 1862): Shiloh and the Western Campaign of 1862 by Edward Cunningham Earlier in that campaign, one of the best CW books in my library: Gott, Kendall D., Where the South Lost the War: An Analysis of the Fort Henry—Fort Donelson Campaign, February 1862, Stackpole books, 2003, ISBN 0-8117-0049-6. Jackson's Valley Campaign (March 1862 - June 1862): Stonewall in the Valley: Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Spring 1862 by Robert G. Tanner The Peninsula Campaign (March 1862 - July 1862): Extraordinary Circumstances: The Seven Days Battles by Brian K. Burton Sears is very readable, but lacks some in the battle accuracy: Sears, Stephen W., To the Gates of Richmond: The Peninsula Campaign, Ticknor and Fields, 1992, ISBN 0-89919-790-6. (of course, there are dozens of books on the battle itself) The Overland Campaign (May 1864 - June 1864): To the North Anna River: Grant and Lee, May 13-25, 1864 by Gordon C. Rhea That covers only a little slice, although Rhea is excellent. (He also has a new coffee-table photo book on the campaign, In the Footsteps of Grant and Lee: The Wilderness Through Cold Harbor.) A good overview is: Grimsley, Mark, And Keep Moving On: The Virginia Campaign, May-June 1864, University of Nebraska Press, 2002, ISBN 0-8032-2162-2. The Atlanta Campaign (May 1864 - September 1864): The Campaign for Atlanta by William R. Scaife The Carolinas Campaign (February 1865 - March 1865): Last Stand in the Carolinas: The Battle of Bentonville by Mark L.
