Rosensteel Descendants Seek Recognition at New Gettysburg Visitor Center Some of you may have seen this on CWi's front page today. If you haven't read it, you should. In this particular case, I really think Latschar and GNMP are being petty and juvenile. Pay attention to the last two paragraphs. Seems they just have a burr up their butt over the family suing them years ago, and are acting like a bunch of P.O'd school kids. Any other opinions?

Sounds like the NPS is wrong to me if the family gave all of these artifacts seems only fitting that they be reccognized. Sounds like the current director is  throwing a tantrum . I am sure there current actions will affect the view of future contributors , as far as weither they will want to help the park or not. I know it would effect mine. Credit where credit is due.

Does the NPS really own them? I had thought the Rosensteel family had only loaned them, providing that proper care would be given. That care was never provided, imo. This issues comes up from time to time.

Sweetea, According to an ancient FAQ page (apparently written even before the National Tower was removed) on gettysburg.com, the NPS contines to "control, own and protect" the Rosensteel collection. And, yes, Latschar — who I think has done wonderful things for Gettysburg battlefield preservation in the past — is being incredibly petty about this. Almost to the point of being irresponsible, I think, if not downright insensitive to the NPS' own hstory at Gettysburg.

Hmmm, maybe they read our board ... Statement regarding display of the Rosensteel Plaques Gettysburg National Military Park has a long history of philanthropy. Today’s “Campaign to Preserve Gettysburg” by the Gettysburg Foundation is the largest and most comprehensive project, in terms of solving long-term preservation problems and enhancing our ability to educate the American public about the sacrifices and meaning of the Battle of Gettysburg and its aftermath. The Rosensteel family’s commitment to gathering and preserving the artifacts of the battle and the town goes back to the earliest days after July 3, 1863, when local citizens were treating the wounded and burying the dead. We at National Park Service honor the Rosensteel family legacy at Gettysburg and we remain grateful for the generous donation of their collection which even today makes up the majority of the battle-related artifacts in our museum collection. I personally want to extend my gratitude to Larry Eckert and Angela Rosensteel Eckert and their families for their generous gift to the American people. After careful consideration, Gettysburg National Military Park has decided to display the Rosensteel plaques in the new Museum and Visitor Center in the collections research room, where researchers will have hands-on access to artifacts from the collection. We look forward to the day when visitors and researchers from Gettysburg and throughout the nation can visit this new world-class museum, experience powerful new museum exhibits illustrated so well with artifacts from the Rosensteel donation, and see these plaques as a reminder of the family’s legacy.
