Come on everybody. I KNOW that many of you have "strange battles" that stand out not so much for their failures or successes, but for really off beat events that took place.

Does this qualify?

Another Stonewall Jackson story. This time, it's Aug. 9, 1862, the Battle of Cedar Mountain, the precursor to Second Manassas. It's not one of Stonewall's better moments. The Stonewall Brigade nearly flanked by Crawford. Stonewall rides up to the front to rally the troops and grabs a battle flag from a color-bearer, shouting 'Rally brave men, and press forward!'. Moments later, after returning the flag, he reaches down to pull his sword, only to find that his rarely used weapon is rusted in in scabbard.

No problem. He unhooks the scabbard and, with the sword still stuck inside, waves the scabbard around to rally the troops. Branch's brigade finally comes up and stops the Federals.

Who said comedy couldn't be inspiring?

My favorite story is Paddy Graydon's mules in the New Mexico campaign.
