I would like to express my sympathies to the family of William Porter.
At times, such as these, it is difficult to know what to say. I did not know William, but I have a young son. My heart is heavy whenever I hear of such a loss.
My God bless his family and be near them in thier time of need.

Well said Albert. My condolences too, it is especially sad to lose one so young who took an interest in our nation's history. Sadly, such children are far and few between with all the distractions life offers them now.
Rest with the Lord, William.

Very kind thoughts Albert and David.
For those that don't play CWi trivia, you probably don't know of William. He began to play trivia last month, and always signed his name follwed by "5th Grade student". He was locating answers for some of the toughest questions we were throwing out. Last week, he missed one, got a little upset, and wrote me. I explained to him why his answer was wrong, and told him that regardless, we were quite impressed with his determination to play a game geared towards much older folks. I told him that I'm sure his parents and his teachers would be proud. He seemed to get quite a thrill from that and promptly wrote back, apologizing for his previous mail, and thanking me for the compliment.
What I didn't know at the time was that William was one very sick boy. This morning I received an e-mail from his father, explaining that William had passed away yesterday morning in his sleep, and thanking me for giving him something that took his mind off his condition in the last days of his life. I'm not too proud to admit that I broke down when I read that e-mail. I never met him, but I think we lost a good one. So that was William, and I'll think about him every morning as I do trivia. He was trying very hard to win our prize ( a Civil War diagram/poster) for his class. As soon as we can, we'll find out his school and donate one to his class in his name.

Been trying to imagine myself in William's (Bill, maybe, as his friends might call him?)shoes.
Impossible.
Must have had an curious mind, and a strong, resourceful spirit , and a determination to make things right.
Never knew him, but wish I did.
I must give my respects to his family who nurtured and developed him into an admirable young boy.
I'll think of him with every question on this board.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Williams family. It is difficult to lose a loved one, especially a child, especially at Christmas time. What a special young man he was. He will be remembered fondly by his new civil war family.
