I believe most abolitionists were hypocrites. For example in her own words she wrote the "ideal negro" should be "refined by white culture, elevated by white blood." and... "the negro among negroes, is coarse, grinning, flat-footed, thick-skulled creature, ugly as Caliban, lazy as the laziest brutes, chiefly ambitious to be of no use to any in the world. . . He must go to school to the white race and his discipline must be long and laborious." She is not alone in her racist views as most abolitionists had them along with everyone else in America at that time. I just don't see how someone with such "convictions" on the plight of the slaves could view them as almost sub-human herself. I have very little respect for the abolitionists, period. Its not just her. Last edited on Fri Mar 13th, 2009 08:27 pm by Savez |

Savez- I respect your opinion and the way it seems to be researched and thought out. My only concerns are concerns I've said before. It is very difficult to place modern values and ideals on historical people. Before dismissing Howe as a hypocrite racist, you have to place yourself in her shoes, in her period, with her education and upbringing. Maybe you have. Also, to have little respect for all abolitionists paints a pretty wide brush stroke. There is not enough room in this website for me to go into all the conflicts I have with John Brown and what he meant to the history of this nation.

The only reason I let it go this far is because it was basically a dead thread when it started, but you are correct. Someone please open a thread on Howe or abolition or whatever and take it up there. I don't have the ability to move individual posts.
