Hey guys,
How bout startin a topic on CW and non Civil War art. The thing is, yall can post yer favorite paintings, prints by Mort Kunsler, Don Trioloni, Gallon or others. We could have the top 10 paintings, of generals, battles or stuff like that. We could find new art and we can vote on it to see if we like it er not. And if any of yall is an artist, don't be affeared, post yer paintings and stuff and we'll see how we like em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To show you what an artistic cretin I am, I love this piece in the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston:
It is so lifelike I expect the two girls to move. Apparently that is what is wrong with it too. Renoir, Monet and Manet deplored the artist, William Bouguereau because its was so life-like. As a result, Boguereau was a successful and fairly wealthy artist with great favor in the general public, while the young avant-garde painters of the time, were mostly starving in their disdain (jealousy?).
I’ve never walked into a room and have a painting draw me to it, like this one does.

Wow! Showing my artistic ignorance, I never heard of the artist. But I have to say I had the very same reaction as you just looking at the picture. It really does draw you in. For a minute, I had to look close to be sure it wasn't a photo retouched in Photoshop. Thanks for the intro to a new artist...

Yes I guess the avant-garde artists had the last laugh becasue we know who they are today but not who Bouguereau was. All were trained classically at the best French school but Bouguereau took a different course and lived the good life by appealing to the masses versus the art critics. I looked hard to find a picture that does it justice, the one I selected was the best but still does not do the piece justice. The figures are all life-sized on the camvas. The little girl and baby also remind me so much of my oldest kids when they were that age.

Could be Cleburne, definitely not Forrest...
Notice the 13th Alabama battleflag with the notation for Ringgold Gap.. Cleburne's Stand!

It is actually a well known painting of Patrick Cleburne. Been on the cover of North & South Magazine , and advertized in many Civil War magazines.

It IS Cleburne. Look at the flag. The blue flag with the white circle in the center is his special flag. It also says Ringgold Gap and Chickamauga, two of Cleburne's illustrious battles. The red horse may be one of Cleburne's favorite mounts, Red Pepper, unfortunately shot at Franklin. http://www.johnramos.com/HerBath.htm This is one of my favorite non Civil War modern painters. He graduated from the same high school I did. I own prints of three of his paintings including this one . There are several more of the California coast I would love to own too but don't have room for them.
John Philip Strain is my favorite Civil War painter of modern times. His Stonewall at Charlestown which shows Stonewall in the rain facing a huge engine hangs on a wall in my house. I won it at a Round Table Convention a few years ago.
Winslow Homer is my favorite Civil War artist . I would love to own a print of his sharpshooter in the tree . Still looking for a copy .
