I was wondering if anyone had read anything new, and exciting, recently? I have several books on Lincoln, that I will be reading soon, but I am really interested in something new on the Civil War. Any thoughts?

Will guess you're talking about "Tried by War" and "Lincoln: President Elect."
If you get interested in Gettysburg, the latest one I have is Eric Wittenburg's, "One Continuous Fight," about the retreat from Gettysburg. (Here I should acknowledge that I ought to have listed his co-authors, but as he is usually listed first, it is the name to use when doing a book search.)

Couldn't call it exciting but "This Republic of Suffering, Death and the American Civil War" by Drew Gilpin Faust is the most fascinating book I've read in a long time. I never realised how a study of death could be so interesting.

"Quantrill's Raiders in Texas" by Evault Boswell-while not necessarily new was one of my recent favorite finds. A couple of my Chiles(paternal GGM)ancestors are noted for their various misdeeds and generally nefarious behavior.
"The H.L. Hunley-the secret hope of the Confederacy"
by Tom Chaffin is at long last sitting at the top of my "to read" pile...it's gotten some nice reviews, I love the subject matter, and the authors previous work "Sea of Gray" was an excellent read.

I posted this over in the general what are you reading thread, but have started a book I got for Christmas called "The Harp and the Eagle: Irish-American Volunteers and the Union Army, 1861-1865." Still on the first chapter, but the introduction sounded interesting. Hope the rest of the book is the same.

I just purchased the new Ronald White book, A. Lincoln: A Biography. Has anyone read it yet? I do not plan on starting it right away, but it has been highly recommended on Amazon.com.

Mike and others I am about to finish Lincoln President - Elect by Harold Holzer. I cannot put it down. the is about the Winter of 1860=61 after he is elected president but hasn't taken office yet I have learned so much about what went on at that time. Rush out and buy it !!!

I've heard some not so nice things about Tried by War. Quite a few Civil War bloggers believe McPherson simply mailed that one in. I'm due to review it sometime soon so it'll be interesting to see for myself.

I've currently got quite a few books on the "reading now" pile. I'm looking at Kentuckians in Gray and Confederate Colonels at the same time for an upcoming review at TOCWOC. In addition, I just got a set of the first four books in the South Carolina Regimental-Roster Set series from Broadfoot Publishing. These are remarkably (and I have to believe intentionally) like the H.E. Howard Virginia Regimental Histories Series in both appearance and content. I plan to do mutpliple blog entries on this series as well. It looks like Broadfoot will only print more of the planned 50 books if the first four sell okay. I'm hoping they do.
