Here's one from one of my eighth graders, as we were studying the background of The Miracle Worker, and discussing how the South felt about the North. Howcome Yankees are called Yankees? Where did that come from? Anyone know? I myself threw a couple ideas at them, but realized I wasn't sure, myself! And then someone else asked: Where did the name Johnny Reb come from? Eighth graders are one big question! Pam

Durn you, Pam (Apparently I'm in a mood to 'durn' everybody tonight). Good question, hate that it came from an eight grader. I did find this, though, regarding 'Yankee:' http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/7/messages/805.html this was a good site, too: http://www.alphadictionary.com/goodword/word/Yankee Both might be a little deeper than I expected, but it's one way to get back at those durn eighth graders. what's wrong with 8th graders Pvt.? Absolutely nothing, DG. It was merely my grudging salute to their apparent precociousness.  And for that, I will now go and durn my socks.

Good question and good research Pvt . Johnny Reb of course come s from Rebel and Johnny is a common name so anyone you didn't know the name of was called Johnny . Bell Wiley uses Johnny Reb for his book on the Southern Soldier, He used Billy Yank for the Northern Must be because Billy was another common name. I always loved the questions my kids came up with. They were first graders too not eighth graders but the questions were still good.

PvtC, Thanks for the two sites, and Susan for the Johnnny Reb explanation. Yes, eighth graders are a trip. Keep me on my toes. Next we read Fever 1793, about yellow fever in Philadelphia. Nothing wrong with eight graders if they are slow roasted and liberally basted with really garlicky butter. And the gravy you can make from the drippings is especially good if you stir in some corn-starch, and simmer it all day.

If you didn't mean to imply otherwise with the sentence on Bell Wiley, I apologize in advance. This is a very interesting question. Anyone else have any ideas?
