Can someone recognize this medal of which I've attached a pic. I found some historical images in some personal affects, and one of the older gentlemen had this medal on. I think it is an old medal of honor from the civil war days, but I'm not sure.

Welcome to the board. It does appear to be a MOH, although there are some differences. Here's a closer look at a Civil War - era MOH:

totally, weird because all the MOH's I can find images of, look the the latter. I found out that the gentlman was in the 8th Virginia Regiment if that helps. There are also thirteen stars on his flag.

I believe that this is a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) medal that they gave out at reunions.  I went to eBay and did a search on GAR medals and several medals came up and they look very much like the one in your picture.

I agree, the medal in the photo is pretty clearly a GAR medal.

See a good example, in a modern photo, of a GAR medal here: http://www.civilwarpreservations.com/catdet.asp?TargetItem=IR376&CategoryType=insignias

Again, no obvious reason I can think of for a former CSA Lt Colonel to wear one of those.

What's your Colonel's name?  And do you have his face, too? An obvious question, perhaps, is are you sure who the man in the photo is?

Good hunting!

Thanks everyone! If you're interested, I started a thread to re-identify my GAR recipient at: http://www.civilwarinteractive.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=429&forum_id=1
