In doing my family history research just found this curious relationship.

Robert E. Lee, John Buford, Jubal Early, Abraham Buford, Nathaniel B. Buford, Thomas C. Marshall, James K. Marshal, Charles Winder, John Winder, Charles Winder, Lloyd Tilghman, Franklin Buchanan, Gerorge Randolph and Basil Duke all can be traced back to the original Lee in Virginia, Richard H. Lee, circa. 1613. Probaby many more familial intertwinings. These indidviduals probably had no clue of their kinship but this does again show that this conflict did pit family vs family. Would be glad to share what I've found thus far and hear of the countless other relationships.

Doc,

Curious is an understatement. I for one would be extremely interested in knowing some details of these relationships. Some I'm familiar with, some are brand new to me. Feel free to post details when you have time.

Franklin Buchanan, Lloyd Tilghman, Charles/John Winder and Francis S. Key's son (Sickles killed prior to civil war having affair with his wife) are connected to Lee through the Bennett - Bland - Randolph-Lee lines.

Edmund Ruffin (fire-eater) and Lt. Col. Thomas Ruffin (13th North Carolina Inf.) connected via the Bennett-Bland-Ruffin lines.

Charles Marshall (Lee’s secretary), Col. Thomas Marshall (7th Vir. Cav.) and  Col. James K. Marshall (52nd North Carolina Infantry) are connected to Lee through the Marshall – Randolph- Lee connection.  Also, connected to the Marshall family are John Marshall (chief justice supreme court) and Gen. George Marshall (WWII).

Robert Barrow (brother-in-law of Hunley) connected via the Lee-Randolph-Bland-Bennett lines.

Gen. John Buford’s wife is in the Marshall and Buford lines, thus they were 3rd cousins.

Can add dates/spouses if needed.  Am interested in union/confederate family members who fought against one another head to head in various battles and would like to hear from those of you who know of relatives pitted against one another.

Doc -

Very impressive research! Can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to type all that. I'm going  to point my trivia players to this thread today - it's the kind of thing some of them would love to see. Thanks again for the effort.
