I would like to see a new section called Preservation. It would be a forum with news and views about preservation projects all over the country. This can cover a wide range of topics. These are what I can think of, surely there are more.
- Not just battlefield preservation, but campsites, earthworks, forts.
- Not just Civil War preservation, but all periods of our history.
- Homesteads, significant roads, fords, mills, places that shaped the lives of the people in an area.
- Legislation, ordinances, zoning, historic districts. Federal, state, county, municipal.
- Work done by large organizations such as the Civil War Preservation Trust, and small ones such as the Hunter Mill Defense League (Hunter Mill Road is now a state-designated historic byway, thanks to the efforts of a few energetic citizens).
- Preservation of archives. The National Archives has had to cut back the hours open, the number of employees, and still can't keep up with the inflow of Federal records (mandated by law), and the rising number of requesters. Maybe some organizations are working on digitizing existing material, or providing grants to do so.
- Raising local awareness of the significance of some special site in an area. Going to the schools for a living-history day, with reenactors in period clothing. Involving public officials in getting the word out.
- Historical easements.
Give it some thought, folks. Would this be a good place to start?

Your wish is our command. You should now see it just below "General Civil War Talk". Good idea!

I'm so glad to know that there is now a section devoted to preservation. It's the single most important issue to all of us, I think. Too much has been lost and much, much more needs to be saved!
The wonderful work being done by all of the historic preservation groups is deserving of the highest praises and the deepest gratitude from all of us. These same groups are also in need of much support...both financially and also through volunteer efforts.
Again, thanks for adding this new section. It helps to "spread the word" and this is one of the best places from which to do that!
Regards,
Sarah
