Grumpy Geezer

Folks,
While we're very proud of Civil War Interactive, I've always thought that one thing that was missing was a map section. Several discussions on this board in the recent past bear this out. For those who have never tried, I have to say that putting a clear readable map onto the web is a great challenge. I have zero talent in actually creating them from scratch, and that left only scanning non-copyrighted or public domain maps. Neither of these resulted in anything I thought was worth putting on CWi.
Recently I ran across some maps which bowled me over with their clarity and detail, digitalized by a gentleman named Hal Jespersen. I contacted Hal 3 days ago, told him what I just wrote above, and asked if he'd allow me to open a new section of CWi using his creations. Turns out he's been a long-time CWi reader, and graciously gave his permission. So for the last 72 hours, breaking only for about 4 hours sleep total, I've been creating our newest section - the CWi Map Room. It features 85 gorgeous maps which I hope will be enjoyed by all.
The maps are in .png format. They may take a little longer to load, but they have one huge advantage. A few of the maps (less than 10) encompass so wide of an area that the print can be hard to read. With the .png format, if you're using IE7, you can use the browser's magnifying tool (look in the lower right of your browser screen) to magnify details without distortion. If these were in .gif or .jpg format, the maps would become fuzzy and distorted. I won't be announcing the new section on the main site for a few days, but decided to announce it here since several threads could benefit from referring to them.
So folks, please enjoy:

Great maps. I'm a stickler for good, clear maps in Civil War books. Far too many Civil War books have too few maps, unclear, hard to read maps or incomprehensible maps. Most are not in color. That is one way Hal Jespersen's maps shine. Color coding just makes everything jump out clearly. These maps are a great asset to CWi.
I hate to be a jerk, but I would love to see a more detailed map of the Vicksburg campaign including Jackson and Champion Hill.
Anyway, I want to thank Mr. Jespersen for generously making his maps available to CWi.

The maps are indeed terrific. My compliments to you for putting them up - not bad for a grumpy 'ol geezer. Of course, I give a special thanks to Hal for making them available.
I live by the map - I read books with maps, watch movies with maps, tour and hike with maps, take armchair vacations with maps, and occaisionally get lost with them. I have hundreds of maps from many, many sources both period and modern.
The new map room is a welcome addition!
Regards, CY

CY: We must have been brothers in a previous life. I'd rather read a map than a good book! The maps have it.

I must be related too. My brother and I are personally resposible for people having to pay for maps now and not get them free at gas stations . At least the ones along old Route 66. I love maps , I read them just for fun. I carry them in the car and refer to them even when I know where I am going. I think by now I know how to get up interstate five to Oregon but I carry my map and count off the towns as I go each summer.
I carried maps for all the states on the trip back to Franklin. That trip was get on Interstate 40 and drive to Nashville turn right . But again ticked off those towns.
I thought I was the only one that reads and watches tv with a map and an atlas next to me. On one wall in my house is the US World and a Map of Navajoland (for reading Tony Hillerman books) Have to add my Civil War battles on as soon as I get a decent frame for it.
Joe thanks so much for the map room.
