I just joined the site and wanted to take a second to introduce myself.
My name is Chuck Shockley and I work at a middle school here in Maryland. I have been visiting this site for over a year and finally took the time to register and join in on the fun.
I have been fascinated with the Civil War since my father took me to Gettysburg when I was a child. I have tried to pass along the gift he gave me to the children here at school (we do an overnight trip to Gettysburg each year with a group of our 8th graders) and with my friends.
I just wanted to take a second to say "Thank You" to all of you for your imput on things on the boards and the way you seem to laugh and have fun with each other. I hope to get to know you all better and (since I am in Gettysburg 8-10 times a year) maybe have an opportunity to put a face with the names someday!
Thanks again!
Chuck

Welcome Chuck!
It is nice to know someone is doing a good job of teaching children about the Civil War. I fear you are in a distinct minority.

Welcome, Chuck, to our group. There's lots to read and discuss here. Glad to have you as one of us. My earliest memory of learning about the Civil War was my eighth grade teacher who had your love of the Civil War and of Gettysburg. I'm sure some of your students will someday be history buffs thanks to you.

An overnight trip with 8th graders! WOW! You've got to be a "Teacher of the Year" winner! That takes nerves of steel!

Devils Den is an appropriate handle for a middle school teacher. Teachers get blamed for everything and seldom credited for anything. Seems you've gotten an appreciative audience for a change. You deserve it.

Thanks for the kind welcomes! I do hope that I get to know all of you better over the coming years.
And I agree that dealing with kids can be trying and a pain at times, the good far outweighs the bad, and with a a little guidance they may be the ones who in 30 years are standing at a monument with a group of childern passing on love that we have for the subject.
We are staying after school tonight to have our Gettysburg class and I must say that my kids are excited! They can't wait for May 2nd to get here so they can join the group of "Reverent men and women from afar, and generations that know us not and we know not of, heart drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for THEM shall come to this deathless field to ponder and dream,"
And I think I am as excited as they are! Plus, the new visitors center! (I am actually going this Sunday to "scout" things out! Hey, I go on a moments notice! Can't wait! Anyone going to be in the area that weekend?

If you can include the Rupp house in your trip I feel it will be a positive. They have many youth interactive type displays. Which help kids to understand what it was like to be a civil war soldier, and what is being done to preserve the military park.

I will be there for certain, have a few of my kids (now in high school) interested in going but are not sure about their work schedule yet. I have tried to tell them they will have their entire life to work, enjoy some of the other things now!
And yes, we will try to include the Rupp House!
Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck -
Scratch the Rupp House. This just came across the Gettysburg Discussion Board:
"The Rupp House is closed due to lack of staffing. All former RH staff still
employed as of the New Year are now employees of Event Network at the VC's
Museum Shop. There seems to be several stories circulating about the Center
reopening. Last I heard Membership was trying to recruit volunteers to open
it on weekends. This will probably not happen this weekend in time for
Spring Muster. Those of you who know me realize that it hurts my heart to see the Center closed, even temporarily. I was among a small dedicated group that saw it
through some very difficult times. Change is always good, but let's hope
the Foundation can find a middle ground that allows a wonderful resource
like the Rupp House to reopen."

Sad about the Rupp House! I walked down to the Farnsworth House yesterday (took my sister and her husband to Gettysburg, their first time!) and saw the Rupp House was closed. We visited the visitor center and the battlefield. They were in awe.
Doc C-I am near Berlin/Ocean City-live in a small town called Showell. I will be going back to Gettysburg Friday morning with our kids from school-leave Saturday afternoon around 3:00. Will you be around the town next weekend? I would certainly enjoy saying "hello!"
