Hello,
A little about myself:
I am 27 and am from Winston-Salem, NC. I studied the Civil War under Dr. Peter Carmichael during my undergrad years at UNC-G, considered writing a thesis about Wilmington, NC during the war (having already researched (Old) Salem, NC) but when I was offered the opportunity to receive the George C. Marshall award for composition (about a subject occuring during the lifetime of George C. Marshall, thinktank behind the Marshall Plan), I became quite involved in American-Soviet relations during the 1950s and 60s. I tried picking my Civil War studies back up after graduation, but that never seemed to happen due to varying circumstances.
At long last, I've decided to re-pursue these studies, even if it is nothing more than a hobby. My primary interests include the antebellum years immediately prior to the war, the response and reasons of the latter eight states to secede or remain with the union, the American West during the war, and the Transcontinental Railroad, among others.
I hope to be able to contribue to future conversation based upon my research.

You've found a good place in which to pursue your "hobby," Charles. You and your research are most welcome. Pull up a log, there's plenty of room.

Charlie , welcome. you sound like you will have lots to offer to the discussion. I too have an interest in the west during the Civil War since I am in California.
