For those that have read "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln" by Doris Kearns Goodwin may be interested to know that Sally Field has been cast as Mary Todd Lincoln and Liam Neeson as Abraham Lincoln in the movie version of this book.
Field has just won an Emmy for her work on a TV show which I don't watch. She also appears in TV ads for a monthly one dose osteoporosis drug. You may remember the ad, the one where she pouts at the mirror while she struggles to decide between wearing one of two dresses. That stupid ad will never convince me to take the drug some day or any day, but that's another topic.
I don't have any more information in reference to the director, script writer, music score composer or when shooting will begin or estimated release of the movie but I defintely want to see it. I'm guessing late 2008 or into 2009 before we see this movie.
Just a thought--wonder if they will be needing Civil War reenactors for any scenes.

Wonder who'll play:
Seward, Stanton [Brian Cox?], Welles, Chase, Nicolay & Hay, and Cameron [the guy who was so crooked, he'd steal a hot stove]; I'm not concerned about Bate, Hamlin, et al. Will be interesting to follow this sign-up list. Thanks for the alert, CleburneFan!

Sally Fields as Mary Todd Lincoln; what happen they run out of B list actresses to audition?

Tony Kushner is writing the script. Spielberg is directing. It should begin filming sometime within the next few months. It's coming out in 2009 for the Lincoln Bicentennial.

I'm apparently one of the few who thinks that Sally Fields is a pretty good choice. Her unfortunate Flying Nun days aside, she's a rather talented actress. Since it's a Spielberg flick, money will be no object, so I assume the best make-up artists will be available, so I don't think that whether the actress looks like MTL is really an issue. It's going to be a challenging role if played right, and an actress of some breadth will be needed.

LOL - I do! Is it possible, just possible that you're more concerned with her political views than with her acting abilities

I, too, think she is a talented actress and should not be forever judged by the silly flying nun thing she did to break into the business. Ever see her in Norma Rae? How about Steel Magnolia's? Her best performance, in my opinion, was the schizo in Sybil. Not to say she hasn't made klunkers but I think her particular strength in acting is in portraying troubled, emotionally charged women. I think she'll do just fine...I look forward to seeing it.

There was a lot of talk that Marcia Gay Harden was going to play Mary. She was a nice little "in between" of Bates and Fields. She also looks more like her.

It's not that I think she is a terrible actress. I too liked her in Steel Magnolias and Norma Rae and also Places In the Heart. I just think there are several other actresses who would remind me of MTL more so. If I'm wrong, I'll be the first to admit it.

Javal I am another that think Sally will do a great job with the role. She is one of the real actresses we have today not just a movie star. her Gidget and Flying Nun days were just the beginning of career . She has done many fine roles since then.
I am looking forward to seeing what she can do with the role.

Javal:
Everytime she accepts an award she come across as an airhead, I don't even have to get to her politics to shake my head at what she says. Acting is most certainly an overrated profession, many are good at it and even some that are horrible at it get jobs based on looks alone. Old Sally does a tolerable job at acting and she is Gidget cute-- nothing special though IMO.
