hi everyone! i'm a new member to the discussion board, but have enjoyed reading the news and many board topics for over a year now. I look forward to contributing my humble thoughts when able. i'm planning a short visit (Thurs-Sun)to the shenandoah valley at the end of april and am looking for some advice to help me decide which towns, sites, and battlefields to consider. i have requested some printed guides from the VA tourism dept (the gamut, ranging from CW to birding) and as i wait, thought i'd ask a couple questions. I'm considering New Market Btfd. as well as Winchester, and the Cedar Creek/Belle Grove NPS (and would love to be persuaded on others). I'm wondering about the interpretation, length of trails, acres interpreted, museums/artifacts, amount of time essential. I've read a couple books about the campaign and have several of the large volume sets to cite...so maybe a quick reference guide that yall would recommend. Also i'm a big hiker, so which trails/sites do you recommend in the area (doesnt necessarily have to be App trail, Shenandoah NP, etc.) just seeking aid from any who've made the trip before. Lastly, I was hoping to hear of any hotels or inns (the small b&b's aren't my thing) that would be great staging points. i was planning on one night in the upper valley and the other two in the lower. Hi Scout and welcome. I am not as knowledgeable of the Shenandoah Valley area as many of our compatriots on this board, but I do highly recommend a visit to the New Market Battlefield. Last time I was there, we followed the route of the VMI cadets from their starting position on Shirley's Hill up to their assault through the "Field of Lost Shoes" where they took the union cannon. It was a very moving experience. Ensure that you have time to visit the Hall of Valor, it is small but worth seeing. Let me know if you go to Gettysburg or Antietam...I can definitely recommend some good places for you.

When I visited the valley I stayed in Staunton at the Best Western. Nice hotel and an old fashion coffee shop next door that was a hoot to visit. Do not miss New Market and the Hall of Valour . You will not have a dry eye either place. Are you going to Lexington ? Stonewall Jackson's home, his grave site and VMI are all there . Staunton for a change of pace has a great Shakespeare theatre . Looks like the Blackfiars Theatre of Shakespeare's time and they do it the way Shakespeare would have. Have a great trip. There is a visitors center in Lexington that has all kinds of ideas too. Hello Scout If you're heading to Antietam, be sure to stop off at Harper's Ferry. Not only is it rather historically important, it's stunningly beautiful, especially from Maryland Heights if a little steep. Whether you then decide to hike from Harper's Ferry to Antietam depends on what you make of AP Hill. The Shenandoah Park is beautiful, although all the hikes I did there involved going down and up the ridge a lot. Unless I have the maps in front of me I don't think I can describe the routes we took, but the trails, even in the more out of the way parts, are well marked. Wow! thanks for the help everyone! New Market is a definite planned stop so i will look foward to it and the Hall of Valour. I actually visited a friend at W&L a few years back and got to see just about everything in Lexington and it was a great experience, part of the reason I'm coming back to the Valley. I think with its proximity to the parks; C&O canal, App trail, NMP, that I'll have to go all the way up to Harper's Ferry...wish i had an extra day or two. javal this website has been a great help. Other suggestions: us route 11 rather than I-81 it's covered with markers was the main road up (south) the valley Front Royal - Lackawanna B&B is a great place Fisher's Hill - a nice trail and new markers Cross Keys and Port Republic - just east of Harrisonburg Charlestown - site of John Brown's trial and execution

Front Royal. My pal and I kept on calling it 'Fort Royal' by mistake. Good place to base yourself for access to the northern parts of the Shenandoah Park. Bama - sounds like a good excursion. Always the unexpected that makes a trip, I find.

Glad to know I am not the only one that does Fort Royal for Front Royal and then I add in getting Port Royal mixed up with Front Royal. Add in Honey Springs, Holly Springs and Honey Hill . I can be totally confused. susan

Just wanted to say thanks!!! to all of you that gave me some advice and information on the Valley trip. Ended up getting a half day at New Market, which was a wonderfully kept site. The museum was great also. Moved on to the Shenandoah NP and got in a day of hiking in the Whiteoak section (after a ranger had given us a thorough examination of our options) It was really great weather for the hike but almost to hot. We then moved on and a got a couple hours in Front Royal dined in Winchester and move up to Harper's Ferry. Had the whole day Saturday saw every section of the park, walked the Chambers Farm and Bolivar Heights and spent a good bit in Old Town. Then hit the C&O and did part of Maryland Heights. Really attained great comprehension of the difficulties in defending such a place. Throughout the day had a couple incredible discussions with some rangers and these were the highlights of the trip for me. We returned through Winchester intending to explore, but the sky opened and we spent most of the time ducking in out of the rain. Anyway just thought i'd pen a few and say thanks! Tom
