How bout this guys, a couple months ago i found 3 Civil War artifacts at my house
1. A Confederate hat insignia
2. A old button
3 A locket with a painting of a woman or girl on it
My dad thinks when JEB Stuart rode through Charles City in 1864, some soldier(s) might have dropped the said items
If you ask me this is cool. My dad knows a Confederate reanactor named Mark Ramsey who said they were worth over $2,000 each!!

Southern Son, what a fun discovery. Were they actually in the house? Maybe somebody found (or bought) them elsewhere and stashed them for safekeeping? Did the house exist before the Civil War?
It might be a good idea to have your artifacts appraised by a reputable dealer. If they really are valuable, it would be wise to have them insured. Also ask the dealer the best way to protect them from light, moisture, skin oils, etc. Handle them with plastic or cotton gloves, for starters. The dealer might have display cases in which you can store your treasures safely with the great pleasure of seeing them any time you want.

Actually, I found em while I was working in the garden at the house. Our house was built in the 1890's by a guy named Roland Orange and our house is called Orange Hill B and B. The items are in our strongbox and in a plastic bag.

Southern Son, the strongbox is OK to protect the artifacts from light, but you can't be sure if they are properly protected from moisture, skin oil, etc. There is a mild acid in skin oil, as well as minute amounts of sweat, which has salt. The locket might be more vulnerable to such damage than the button and insignia. You would feel so bad if you opened it up in a few years and discovered . . .
Ask a dealer for advice. Another source of info would be a museum. Think of it as preventive medicine. Regards, Patty
