I was able to buy the 1992 John Mack Faragher biography of Daniel Boone in my local thrift ship for $.50 and snatched it up about 2 weeks ago.
Having been raised on a mink ranch in the Midwest with lots of woods to roam in and being a huge fan of the Davy Crockett series as a child, I was anxious to read the Boone biography (I've also learned I have one KY ancestral line).
This a must read and an eye-opener. So far the 2 most important points are: 1) because only the aristocrats hunted in Europe, American men learned from the Native Americans and at least on the NC frontier almost totally adopted their ways and dress, including hair and their "long hunts" in which they were out all winter often; 2) the real issue for the Native Americans was the commercial hunting of deer, beaver, etc. for fur and hides; they considered not using the meat a sickening waste; and the Indians really starved because the deer, bear, beaver, etc., were killed off, very early in tremendous quantities, even by 1750. In turn the Americans thought it a waste for the Indians not to farm extensively.
