As a whole, movies this summer have been a disappointment to me, even the much vaunted Transformers movie, the GI Joe movie and the Star Trek movie. I even wasted good money seeing some of these at the I-Max.

However, two movies do stand out as my personal faves this summer, both dealing with history.

One is the Johnny Depp/Christian Bale movie Public Enemies. It is based on a book of the same name, but the book includes many more of the thirties gangsters. This movie concentrates mainly on just John Dillinger (Depp) and his FBI pursuer (Bale.)

Depp makes an incredibly good Dillinger. I have read that he and Dillinger are the same size and that Depp was allowed to try on some of Dillinger's clothes at the jail house museum in Crown Point, Indiana. I have visited that jail, by the way.

One thing I especially enjoyed in the movie was the meticulous attention to detail in the sets, the cars of the time, the clothing, even the period music. In fact, a CD of the soundtrack is available.

Even though one knows how badly this is going to turn out for Dillinger, the film keeps the viewer interested every minute. When it comes out on DVD, I want my own personal copy. This movie was overshadowed by the big summer block busters and, unfortunately, did not attract the audience it richly deserved.

The second movie that stands out this summer is Quentin Tarantino's Inglourius B****rds. I'm not sure I can get away with using the exact title. Anyway, at the cinema, this title is deliberately misspelled.

The movie stars Brad Pitt in an unusual role for him...not at all a romantic lead. He is a lieutenant in charge of a squadron of American Jewish soldiers dropped behind lines in France for the express purpose of capturing and torturing Nazis. Among other things, they are ordered to take the scalps of any Nazi they capture...and, yes, this is shown. (I hid my eyes!)

Throughout the movie I wasn't sure if this was an actual event in World War II or fiction based on a group of guerillas who may have existed or what. I can't ruin the end of the movie for you, but by the end you will surely know how accurate a portrayal of WW II France this is.

One particularly compelling character is the ruthless German officer who is tasked with  rooting out Jews any way he can. Another compelling actor is the one who plays Hitler, but he gets little screen time.

The movie lasts two and a half very tense hours, but I was interested every minute. Be advised that if you do not enjoy movies with sub titles, you won't like this movie because much of the dialogue is spoken in German and French. At least, the lettering on the sub titles is big and easy to read.

If you are a Tarantino fan or a fan of World War II movies, definitely check this out. Skip it if you have a weak stomach for realistically filmed violence because this film has more than enough.
