http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,884551,00.html I found this article on line when I searched for information on people that eat dirt. I can remember my Mom telling me about hill people that ate dirt . Always really poor and back in the hills . Now my Mom didn't always have everything right but I did find this article. I couldn't find the orginal postings so made a new one. Susan

Wow, that's fascinating, Susan! Thank you! Time Magazine, 1942, definitely a blast from the past. I notice there was no mention of a control group or defining of what "eating dirt" meant to the investigators (like how much, how often, and whether or not it was in response to the investigors daring them to do so....). Of course, those were simpler times, scientific studies didn't have to be particularly scientific....

All this talk is making me hungry. I could really go for a good mudpie about now. You know, the kind with alternating layers of silt and peat in an oyster shell pie crust and sprinkled on top with a nice dusting of Key West sand. Presentation is everything. And if I ate a second piece, would I be re-peat-ing myself? Of course, I could serve this meal only in my own house because, after all, there's no place like loam.

Pvt . I have made you a beautiful multilayered mudpie , layered with seashells and white sand from the Beaches of Huntington. Sorry no Key West sand but I believe Huntington Sand is of fine quality. Well sifted . Good clay from the oil fields were included plus topsoil from the strawberry fields . I have shipped addressed to Pvt Clewell North Carolina USA hope it gets to you in one piece. Hope the post office doesn't eat it before it gets to you. Miss Susan

Regarding the article that FedReb posted: Hmmmm, going into the bathroom to eat dirt...the plot thickens....wonder if she washes her hands when she's through? "``The fundamental question I have is, who started this?'' Dr. Grigsby said. ``Were they just so hungry they decided to eat dirt?''" I'm gonna write up a grant proposal to study this essential question. I will need lots and lots of money. Must purchase at least 20 acres of fine Geogia soil for study. Also, will need to build a nice, comfortable, home-like structure on said soil, in order to most effectively study and collate my findings.... With a hot tub and swimming pool for cleaning up after a hard day in the field. Also, lots of travel money, as the study of localites will be in order. Also, it appears that at least one extended trip overseas, to England, will be necessary. Following that, I shall pro'bly have to expand my study to all seven continents....well, it looks like I may have to dedicate the rest of my life to this, so I must get busy, now...
