We named our gray cat Dixon, after LT George Dixon, commander of the CSS Hunley. We named our son Jeb Stuart, our dog Shilo, and our daughter Mellisa, after the Allman Bros song!! Maybe one day we'll think of something original!!

We have three cats: Jackson (for Stonewall), Natty (for N. Lyons), and Forrest (Guess who). Plus 2 dogs: Shiloh ( for the battle) and Turk (because Laurie said if I gave one more pet a Civil War name, she'd bury me at Shiloh).

Granted, it is not named after a person, but we have a cat named Ortega because my daughter named the cat after we had tacos for dinner.

Our dog is named Marti. (After Wal-Mart where Dear One saw her at a Humane Society exhibit when I was out of town one week doing odd jobs for the Dad. It was a week before the accursed dog would let me in the house.)

We have two Bijons named Maddie (the cartoon character-Madeline) and Benji (the drummer for Green Day). Before these two we had a Dachshund/Poodle mix i named Yankee. The vet called him a Doodle...ergo, Yankee Doodle.

We had a wondeful pitch-black, fluffy Persian cat that I named Reza Shah Palavi after having looked up Persian history in the World Book Encyclopedia. That was back in the 1950s before history took such a frightful turn in Iran. We never did call our cat by that long fancy formal name. We usually just called him Blacky.
