Bama,

I agree....I don't do crowds that well either, but, this is my chance to reenact in a large, national event....My first since I started reenacting! I am hoping to "go through a window" at this event!

Just got to say I'm envious, crowds or no crowds I'd love to come. However If I lived closer than I do I would also go when it's quite, having said that I can see the attraction of seeing a major re-enactment.

)).. I wanna go!!!

I would have to tell my wife it was just a holiday to the USA and then act suprised that there was a re-enactment of Gettysburg on at the same time and it was also a coincidence that a Confederate battery had some gear for me to wear.

Hmm.... how tempting is that?

Funnily enough I nearly said the same in my last post Susan. I think there is already someone who does an Arthur Fremantle impression, I don't think he'd be too impressed with an imposter:P

Anyway Lieutenant Colonel Coldstream Guards is waaaaay above my station.

Hey Roger that is part of the fun of re-enactment. To portray someone you are not!! I will be able to see the new museum when we go in May for the friends of Gettysburg work weekend. Then back in October for the cyclorama in October for the Friends muster. I have seen the cyclorama in Chattanoga which was quite impressive due to the base in front of the painting which adds alot to the 3 D effect.

Susan-

Great idea about Roger coming to Gettysburg as Fremantle.

If he unable to come, maybe we can suggest Fremantle as a subject for one of his miniatures. However, if he does that, I'd urge him to portray the old fellow in the field. It would seem to be a daunting task to try to paint all of the hardware on his formal uniform.

More info on the distinguished general:

Arthur Fremantle, British Coldstream Guards, visited the American Civil War as a civil war observer and witnessed the battle ...

I seem to recall reading Fremantle wore civvies at Gettysburg. However it would make an interesting little vignette a Coldstreamer alongside CSA officers.
So many ideas, so little time.

TexDef, the second link is where I read he wore civvies. Thanks I couldn't remember where I'd seen it.

Anyway who's going to Gettysburg? I'd better get this back on track seeing as I got us off it.

Actually, we will be falling in with the 49th North Carolina. We'll be going as Infantry, since it is too costly for us to haul 2 cannon that far!

The last reenactment I was in (at Princeton, IL last October) there were 2 British observers. They sure had some sharp uniforms! They even had their dress uniforms on for the Ball Saturday evening!

Roger you continue to impress me with your soldiers.  That is amazing.  Yes we do tend to "bird walk"   A term I learned when I was teaching about how kids can pull you off the topic you are teaching by the questions they ask.  Think about how a bird walks.  . . . . conversations can wander away from the main subject that way also.

Back to topic.  I wish I could get to Gettysburg but don't know when I can get back.

Roger-

It looks like I shouldn't have teased you about painting decorations on dress uniforms.

Thats quite a figure. It looks a bit like Blucher. (though I'm not sure about the curvature of the moustache). Well done.

I'll be making two trips from Western New York to Gettysburg on this 145th Anniversary.  I will be commanding Reynolds's Battery L, 1st New York Light Artillery there for the reenactment.  Then in November our battery will rent a tour bus and take a tourist trip down there for Remembrance Weekend.  We'll march in the parade, do a memorial at our two monuments and visit the new Visitor's Center.  All of us are really looking forward to it.

Wow- I was way off on that figure. That goes to show how much I know about dress uniforms of German (or Prussian) field marshals.     :?

I didn't know much until I started that figure.
Researching the uniforms and equipment is all part of the fun.
