Funny, I have been reenacting for about 7 years now-seems like just yesterday (oh crap, I'm starting to sound like Ole or Johan- My LP duties have really cut into my reenacting time starting last season, and the future looks like that pattern will hold. In my time reenacting, however, I have had the pleasure of meeting many outstanding individuals with a commitment to history exceeded by none. Having said that, it has also been my great misfortune to be at events with the less savory sort wearing both the blue and the gray. Whether it be in the form of racists or w/e, there are those reenactors who I hate to be even so indirectly associated with-but there it is. I must point out, though, that anytime you get such a large group of people together it is to be expected. Reenactors are no different as a group than any other large group, and it is impossible not to have a few bad apples in such a large barrel. You just have to try to keep the actions of the few from ruining that of the many.

Although I am a blue-blooded defender of the Republic and never had to deal with the "great unwashed" calling me a rebel racist, I have had similar experiences in other time periods. I also do WW2 as a member of the Waffen SS, and every so often I would get the whole nazi attrocity argument from someone. People portray one side or another for so many different reasons, but if they didn't we wouldn't have much of a hobby would we? Shane

I just read thru this older thread. Interesting. I always found reenactors to be good teachers. Always got my questions answered intelligently and politely. A big 'Thank You' to all you reenactors out there. younglobo: 2500 lb qtr horse? Does he just look that big or are you planning on going medieval on us? If it's for real, you better put that hoss of yours on a 1000 lb weight loss plan pronto....Never heard of putting crushed oreos on a lemon meringue pie. Wait a minute...don't tell me...have been feeding that stuff to that big ole hoss of yours!

It has been my experience and observations that any reenactor (whether military or civilian) who won't or can't do both YANK and REB impressions aren't REAL reenactors... Now, before anyone starts flaming me for that statement, let me slip into my nomex skivvies...

I have been out of the reenacting world for a few years now, but I recognize this accusation. I have participated in both Confederate and Federal units and for the most part did not encounter any racists. The fact is though, that there are racists in BOTH camps, just as there are in "real" life. I will say that I attended an event in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana several years ago that was attended by representatives from the KKK. They placed some contentious flags about the event grounds and it was the Confederate reenactors that kindly persuaded them to remove them.

Confederates (SCV) have no use for the KKK... they spew filth and use our flag while doing so. they are a big part of the problems people today have with the battleflag Ed

Ed that is so true . I am sure the men that fought under the flag of the Confederacy would not want it used as the KKK uses it today. Susan Hope things are well with you .

The "white power, aryan nation, KKK crowd" has done major disfavor to those who just want to recognize the sacrifice and honor of our southern brethren. Hey. I didn't do it and it's not my cross to bear. Someone stole your symbols and turned them into the equivalent of swastikas. It wasn't me. Somewhere, deep down inside, I'd like to see Bubba and Billy Bob and James and Bill just tear the crap out of the racist crowd and take back the CBF. Ole
