My father and brother volunteered when  the first gun of war was sound. They both were killed at Seven Pines.  I have spent these last years nursing my invalid mother.  Unfortunately, last winter she lost her battle with the grip.  I have not but a few items of clothing.  For unbeknownst to my sick mother, I sold our homestead and possesions for medicine and other supplies and some livestock.  All of those items now gone.  I have wanted nothing more these last years than to put on my father's kepi and take a rifle into battle to stop the yankee invaders.  I have heard the confederacy is making movements into Northern Virginia around Spotsylvania.  I will go and join them.

neglected to say i am not totally unpreparred for the job... i have a basic uniform(brogans, trousers, muslin shirt, bummer and i also own a kepi). the shell jacket i own i understand may not play depending on my recruitung unit. its a double breasted shell i got for another impression. i am down a haversack, blanket your other misc goodies, and i need a rifle. those are in the making however and i also understand that my firearm is a top priority. looking forward to hearing from someone...

There is a thread in the reenacting section that might be of interest. Lodgewood.com always has something interesting in their consignment page for firearms & are IMO an excellent business to work w/. Good people who have always done good by anyone I know that has dealt w/ them.

What firearm you get will depend on your persona and presentation unit. You pretty much can't go wrong w/ an M1842 smoothbore; it's a good generic war wide application w/ the CS using them all the way through to the end. A P53 is a good choice as well but I would suggest any one of a half dozen excellent defarbs. The price on the P53 is dropping through the floor w/ a lot of originals being brought over from Afghanistan; an original in shooting condition can be found for the $700-$1000 range; about the same price for a good defarbed repop.

I carry an M1841, M1861 or Lorenz for my own impression; 15th Corps AoT US. Wee bit different from what you're likely to work towards.

Your appropriate jacket will depend on the unit and timeframe you opt for. A Richmond Depot Type 1 or Commutation jacket will probably work for you regardless. I'm patrial to Waumbaugh & White, Stony Brook or CJ Daley. I own no CS gear only US but have gone through the same thing on acquiring gear. Pay the extra money for quality, you do get what you pay for in this hobby and in life.

Many units will have loaner gear available, some more experianced members will always be willing to part w/ some older gear. And joining the Authentic Campaigner can be well worth the $20 investment to access the wanted/for sale forum.

Good Luck

Howdy from NoVa, GrayGuerrilla, I'm your neighbor in Fairfax County.

The 17th Virginia is a reenacting outfit with several companies.  Company D, the Fairfax Rifles, participates in living-history as well as battle reenactments.  Last October, for example, they were at Cedar Creek, and more recently, at Loudon Heights, Harpers Ferry.  Also they march in the Independence Day parade in Fairfax City.  At Fort Ward in Alexandria, and the Sully Plantation Park, they do several living-history events a year.

I have an old brochure with contact info which may be out of date, but here goes:

Fairfax Rifles, c/o Jim Stevenson, 25538 Heyer Square, South Riding, VA  20152-5310.

Contact Jim by phone at 703-327-2386 or via e-mail at Pres17D@msn.com.

If none of those work, let me know.

Patty
