The Friends of Fort Defiance in Clarksville, Tennessee are sponsoring the first of what is hoped to be an annual civil war encampment/living history and ball on the weekend of August 29-30, 2009. The encampment and living history will be held at Rotary Park in Clarksville instead of on the fort premises due to construction work. The encampment and living history is a free event with firewood and hay/straw provided for reenactors. You must have an above ground fire ring if camping. No fire pits will be allowed. The ball is a ticketed event to raise money for the new Fort Defiance Visitors and Interpretive Center. The ball will be hosted by the Friends of Fort Defiance at the Smith-Trahern Mansion in Clarksville from 5-9 PM on August 29. Reenactors who camp for the weekend can purchase tickets to the ball for $15 per person. Reenactors that do not camp can purchase tickets for $30 per person. A period dinner will be provided at the ball, along with period music and dancing. Period dress is required for all those wishing to attend the ball. How much more money would you generate if the "period dress" restriction to the dance were lifted? ALL reenactors are already in period dress anyway. If the restriction were lifted, would that not encourage more of the general public to attend? I'm sure there are many "civilians" with an interest in history, but do not have period clothes. I bet they'd like to attend a "period" supper with period music, but would stay away for lack of attire...... At the events I attend, there is no dress restriction, which means I see a lot of "locals" comming to enjoy themselves and learn a bit of history (as well as generate income for the event!). It is fun to watch them keep up with the Dance Master! They have so much fun!! ....just an idea. Thanks for the info!!
