Why is this in the "Reenacting and Living History" section? It's obviously neither one of those!

'Cause it is too reenacting! :D It's just not of the "guns and battle" variety. :D

I don't know if you've ever been to one of these balls....most folks come in period costume and we dance period dances to period tunes. Just got back from one this weekend, actually. Almost all of the men were in uniform and the ladies were in ball dresses. Unreconstructed played period tunes and we did whole bunch of old-fashioned dances. It was fun!

Does that clear up the confusion?

My apologies for any offenses...

I agree that Unreconstructed is a pretty good group.

And I guess I have to (grudgingly) agree that balls are as valid as mainstream "powder burners."  It's just that I think along the lines of c/p/h.

I just hope that all of the ladies' dresses had either buttons or hooks & eyes and that none had zippers running down the backs!

No offense taken whatsoever.

Zippers? What's a zipper? LOL! :D

Greetings all!

The Olde South Ball is almost here--only three weeks away!

There is still time to register for the Olde South Ball held on Saturday, December 12, 6:00 p.m., in Greenville, SC, at the Marriott Hotel, 1 Parkway East, Greenville, SC. Registration is open until December 5. Pre-registration is required.

Make the Olde South Ball a unique Christmas present to someone special! Make it a date night for you and your sweetie! Treat yourself and a friend to some old-fashioned fun!

The Olde South Ball harkens back to the 1860s so here's your chance to don hooped ballgowns, uniforms, frockcoats, and fancy formalwear and enjoy the music and dances of the era. So find those dance shoes, dig out your cravat, straighten your uniform, and plan to join us for a special evening of good food, fun old-fashioned dancing, and friendly fellowship!  Don't forget to mark your calendar for December 12! We are going to have a wonderful time!

Silent Auction & Door Prizes
We have many fun door prizes. Maybe you will win one!

We also have some impressive silent auction items for you to bid on. Be sure to bring some extra dollars and return home with a great prize! Part of the proceeds from the auction go to benefit The Boys Home of the South, a local home for needy boys. More details on this will be coming later.

Book Signing
Dale Roberts, author of Travis Hawkins McLeod: A Texan in the War Between the States, will have his books for sale and will be present to autograph your purchases. This book has received a 5-star rating on Amazon.com and a very favorable review in Confederate Veteran magazine. This book would make an ideal Christmas present!

Menu
The 3-course formal supper includes your choice of chicken or beef, fried green tomatoes, cheddar mashed pototoes, fried okra, and more! At dessert time we will have speciality cakes fitting for the occasion.

Dances
A tentative dance schedule is posted on the website. We are planning enough variety that everyone from beginners to experienced dancers should enjoy the slate. However, since all of the dances are taught and called by the dance master, everyone should be able to participate in every dance. We want everyone to have fun!

Free Dance Practice
Please note that a free dance practice will be held the morning of the dance at the F. W. Symmes Branch Library, 1508 Pelham Road, Greenville, SC 29615 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (About 5 minutes from the Marriott.)

Non-dancers Welcome
If you don't wish to dance, but want to attend a fun, gala evening, please join us! We would love to have your company!

Dinner Music
Joyful Harps is busy polishing their beautiful music so that we can enjoy lovely harp music during supper.

Joyful Harps will have their harp CDs on-site for you to purchase. Their brand-new CD, Joyful Harps Yesteryear, will be available, in addition to their other 5 CDs, for you to choose from. These CDs would make very special Christmas presents!

Free Photography
Our photographer will be happy to take a picture of you in your best 1860s pose against a formal backdrop. The sitting is free. Photographs will be posted at a special website for you to download for free at your leisure or you can bring your own camera and our photographer will be happy to take a couple of shots for you.

Continuing Information Updates
Please be sure to continue checking the website. We are adding new information regularly: http://www.oldesouthball.com

For those of you who enjoy Facebook, we are also updating information about the ball there at: http://www.facebook.com/inbox/?ref=mb#/event.php?eid=148973128901&ref=mf

Registration
Remember, you may (a) register online via credit card or (b) download a registration form from the website and mail in your check. Don't forget to choose 'beef' or 'chicken' when you register. The Marriott needs to know ahead of time.

Registration Fee
Registration is $65.00 per person. Gentlemen ages 16 and older who attend without an escort and are willing to dance with unescorted ladies may register at a special discounted rate of $45.00.

Lodging
If you are traveling from a distance, you can stay at the Greenville Marriott where the ball is being held for a special rate of $89.00 per night, plus tax. Be sure and tell them you are part of the Olde South Ball. You can call them at 864-297-0300 to make your reservation.

If you have any further questions, please e-mail: info@oldesouthball.com or visit www.oldesouthball.com

***Explanations regarding attire for the ball

Please dress up. A uniform, a sports coat & tie ensemble, a suit, or a tuxedo is acceptable for the men. A period-correct ballgown or a dressy evening outfit for ladies is acceptable--either floor length or calf length is fine. Ladies will be most comfortable and safe when dancing if they wear low-heel shoes or dressy flats. High heels and slides will be awkward for you to wear because of the nature of the dances.

If possible, both men and women should bring white wrist-length gloves for dancing. Gloves were the proper attire for dancing in the 1860s for both men and women. (If you don't have gloves, please come anyway, but we want to let you know about the 1860s protocol.)

***Explanations regarding the dancing
You don't have to know how to dance to participate in 1860s dancing. These dances are 'called' dances, meaning we will have a dance master who explains the dance steps, walks everyone through the dance steps before each dance, and then continues to call the steps throughout the dance. Beginners are welcome!! Veterans of 1860s dancing will be very understanding and happy to help you through the dances.

Please share the news about the Olde South Ball with your friends and family! The more, the merrier! We look forward to having the honor of your presence!

Cordially,

The Olde South Ball Committee

Hi folks!

There are only FIVE days left to register for the Olde South Ball! (To clarify, if you are planning to snail mail your registration, that means we need to RECEIVE it in five days. The December 5 deadline is the real deadline, not the postmark date.)

Register online at http://www.oldesouthball.com or download a mail-in registration form! Register by DECEMBER 5!

BREAKING NEWS!
Check out our new silent auction link on the home page! Now you can actually see some of the fabulous items we have available for you to bid on at the ball! Our star item is a new signed print by Mort Kunstler, specially signed for the occasion! Ladies will be interested in some of the fancy jewelry, gents will want to check out the year's free membership to Allen Arms shooting range. There are other delightful items as well. You can see details about the auction here:

http://www.oldesouthball.com/auction.html

The majority of the auction proceeds are going to benefit the Boys Home of the South, a local home for needy boys. So if you bid and take home some great items, you'll be doing a charitable deed at the same time!

Y'all come and bring your friends! We'd love to see all of you at the ball!
