I have been reenacting for about two years now and am attached to a unit in south Jersey. Recently I have been getting requests for living history presentations and I would love to do them. I know that some units have fees for such things but I haven't a clue as to what is the average going rate for this. Can anyone give me some guidance about what is reasonable? All proceeds from these LV's would go to our unit and maintenance of a monument we recently built in Woodbury NJ. If someone could suggest a fee for anything from 1 person to several soldiers with a mini camp and firing of muskets that would be great. Thanks!

I think your fee structure would depend on the type of presentation and for whom it's being done. If my artillery group (seven members) is asked to do a presentation for a school, we won't charge a fee. We were recently asked to do a firing at a memorial for a soldier. A fee was offered, but we wouldn't accept it (the majority of our group are veterans). If the request is "commercial" in nature, i.e., a wedding, our fee starts at $200.

Hi, thanks for the input. This is for a historical society in a nearby town that hopes to add new members and drum up support for their local efforts and needs. They used another unit in past years but their fees have been getting outrageous according to my contact. However, they did not tell me what it was this year. I agree that I would not charge a school or scout group. I appreciate the advice.

This is a great way to expand your audience.
For starters, consider merely recouping your expenses: travel, food, powder, 'wear and tear' and lodging (if any).
That should be a fairly modest sum and fair to you and your audience as these expenses are easy to account for.
It's surprising how the incidental costs (gas!) add up...

You are right, Hank. We really are just looking for cost of powder and travel with a little bit for the unit coffers to maintain our monument. Thanks!

Our unit does primary National Park Service events, but some of our guys do local events. In those cases, we don't charge. If the event is being done in an area where our members are not located (but they have asked for us), we usually ask for an amount to cover travel and mess while we are there.
Good luck in spreading the word.
