I think Ft. Pillow is in April....check the State Parks website for more info....that's where I heard about it....
In my end of Illinois (west....bordering Davenport, Iowa) we go to Princeton, IL....In this area, there's also an event in Galesburg, IL....one in Galena, IL (home of Gen. Grant). There are others, but we usually go to Iowa and Wisconsin (Boscobel and Greenbush....I have been to Coon Valley once).....So far this year, we've scheduled 8 events.....My first year (2 years ago) we had 10 events.....

Steven,
If you do go to Ft. Pillow, don't expect it to be on the same scale as Shiloh....Don't get me wrong, I love it there, though! (both my Dad and Grandfather were born a few miles from there!) It's been 7 years since I was there last, so things may have changed from the way I remember them.....Their muesuem is nice....It's a walk through the woods (some steps, etc) from the mueseum to the fort....a few markers along the way that will give a breif summary of the battle. There's nothing in the fort except a couple of tents and a few Parrot rifles.....I've always enjoyed going, but, then again, I had family in the area so I always visited the fort; especially to see if they had any good books in their gift shop!

Albert; my father provided the collection of period arms at Thunder last year; he was the Pioneer. Yep we got wet clean through on Saturday; almost felt like a good SC soaking. I was the loud and obnoxious Corporal during the skirmish; my wife was in the cabin next to the barn. Will see you there again this year... we're doing the Hornets nest. Look me up at Thunder.
BTW you have joined the arty unit by which other CS batteries should be judged... you're w/ a great group of men.

About 6 IIRC... used to be my stomping grounds. My service area was from Peoria in the east to Waterloo IA in the west; Decorah IA in the North to Keokuck in the South. Lots of windshield time.
I used to live in Rock Island... enjoyed it actually; visited the Arsenal museum about 3 times a month.

I know we are way off topic here but what the hey!
Steven, you said you live in TN., will you be going to Cumberland Gap this year? I have been there the last 2 years and enjoyed myself (I was with Commonwealth Battery) and wondering if you had been there.
Also, I am going to Gaines Mill/Malvern Hill event in Virginia-I had heard that there was some ...Ahem...controversy before last years event but I never heard any more about it. Does anyone have any information regarding this event?

Johan, Hopefully we can find a decent event at a half way point that we can meet at.
BTW: Bridgeport is only a few weeks away if you still want to go to it : )
Ky. Orphan, I have never been to Cumberland Gap. Another one of them places I plan to visit.
When is that event?

Steven, I'm pretty sure it is the last weekend in April (thats what it has been the last two years) but I can check and be certain if you are indeed interested in attending the event. The last two years we reenacted in town on Saturday, and on Sunday in a field just outside of town owned by Lincoln Memorial College (the colleges' agrticulture department owns it I believe). It is my understanding that this year both battles will take place inside of town. I usually don't like "street battles" (especially if you are participating as an artilleryman), but the town itself is great and they do a good job setting things up.
I wish someone knew a little more about Gaines Mill/Malver Hill event. I understood that there was going to be tacticals both mornings along with the usual scripted events on both days. Like I said though, I heard that there was some controversey leading up to the event last year and I would like to find out more.

If I may. I would like to mention what is in my Haversack/Knapsack. Which one I use depends on my mood. I really like my Knapsack most of all. Lets see now, I have only the necessities (what I think they are). Gun cleaning items, waterproof gunsock rolled up, candles(2),toothpaste/toothbrush,medicine,food,coffee,eating utensils, canteen half, blanket pins, sleepcap(usually packed in my bedroll),and extra socks. If I am a private then I keep one or two packs of extra rounds, cards and my Bible, maybe something else to read like a period dime novel.
I know after I post this I will think of that one thing that I use, but anyhow, that is all I can think ofas of now

Welcome aboard, 1stSgt P. A question: sleepcap? As you are a reenactor and I am not, I'll assume there is an historical basis for that item. But I would appreciate being educated.

Sleep cap is needed come winter time, makes a huge difference when sleeping on the ground... mine stays securely in the blanket roll. I don't want any salty grease in my hair!

A sleep cap is a must for any reenactor. It is designed to keep your body heat from escaping from your head. If you look at some period pictures or as a matter of fact look at some victorian sleepwear or Christmas pictures with men holding their candles. You will see them in sleep caps.
Since some guys like me wear a hat . I need something that I can wear at night when I lay down.

Thanks guys. It just never occurred to me that someone would voluntarily sleep in a tent when it's cold.

I am not going to lie and say it don't get cold at some events, however,if you know what you are doing, and you do your research on how the soldiers stayed warm, you can slow down or somewhat diminish the cold.
And by the way who said anything about a tent? Thats is just extra weight to tote.

They didn't have campers during the CW? Barbaric! No screen tents, Weber grills or Coleman lanterns? And here I thought those boys were having a good time.
