My CW ancestor is Madison William Harris, born in 1843 in Marshall County, MS. He enlisted at age 18 as a Private in the 1st Miss Regiment. I am assuming he was in Co. A, Walker Reserves. When I put the info into the CW Soldiers and Sailors website, all I get is "Sorry, can't be found." What am I doing wrong?

izzy- I don't find your Madison W. Harris on CWSS. No system or list is perfect. There is a Madison Harris in the 4th Arkansas Infantry, but he might be the Madison H. Harris listed separately in that unit. This might be where your Madison W. Harris is buried. Madison W. Harris (1842 - 1901) - Find A Grave Memorial This might be the 4th Arkansas one, who might be the Madison H. one, who probably isn't the Madison W. one. Madison served in the Civil War. He and his wife, Linnie, lived in Father: Sherrod II HARRIS b: 25 Jul 1797 in Union County, NC Mother: Rebecca KIRBY b: 1815 in Chapel Hill, NC Marriage 1 Linnie SLOAN b: 1847

Thanks guys! TX Defender - The first listing, Madison W. Harris 1842-1901 is his headstone. Javal - That is him alright. Note the name of his fourth child, Pratt Madison. Madison gave the name Pratt to his son after a man named Pratt (I don't know if it is a first or last name) that saved his life in the war. The name, Pratt, has been carried forward in the family to today. I'm wondering, even though the family history says that he was in the 1st MS, if he enlisted in the TN county where Colliersville is. izzy- Shelby County, TN does border Mississippi, so its just possible that he was living there when he enlisted in a Mississippi unit. I'd be interested to see the 1860 Census records possibly showing where he and also where Linnie Sloan lived. In all probability, her family lived in Shelby County. Considering her age, he probably married her there after the war. Linnie Sloan Harris (1847 - 1905) - Find A Grave Memorial As for the place of his enlistment, that might be found on pension forms if he applied for one after the war. You might also learn something from 1870 and subsequent Census records. In addition, you might be able to learn more from the West Tennessee Historical Society. Our research group is the process of trying to prove the ancestors of Madison William HARRIS and are looking for descendents of this line to help us in this process. We have taken our Harris line back many generations and to make the final connectioins, we need help from Harris descendents such as youself. I would apppreciate anyone interested in this to contact me as soon as possible.
