I recently learned that I had a relative who served in the 77th Ohio V.I. He was killed at the battle of Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas. I have not been able to find out too much about this unit and wondered if anyone knew where I might find some info about the 77th. Thanks.

Here is the tombstone of the original commander of the 77th Ohio, Colonel Jesse Hildebrand.

At the Battle of Shiloh in April of 1862, Hildebrand commanded a brigade consisting of the 53rd Ohio, the 57th Ohio, and the 77th Ohio. On the first day of the battle, the commander of the 53rd Ohio, Colonel J.J. Appler, tried to warn his divisional commander, General William T. Sherman, of an impending enemy attack, but he was not believed. His warning turned out to be correct.
In August of 1862, Colonel Hildebrand and the 77th Ohio took over the garrison at the Alton, IL Penitentiary, which had been abandoned and then in 1862 taken over by the Federal Army. The place was soon overcrowded by Confederate POWs.
Colonel Hildebrand's performance in this command was considered unsatisfactory, and he was releived of his command in March of 1863. He died soon after.
