This will appear in NewsWire tomorrow: The Gettysburg Civil War Chapel on Chambersburg Street burned to the ground today in a four-alarm fire. The blaze began at the chapel and spread to the Ragged Edge Coffee House next door at 110 Chambersburg St. The back-stage area and stock room were destroyed. The fire also spread to the Adams County rescue shelter. There are at least six apartments there. Everyone made it out of the building, and officials said no one was hurt. The fire also caused "moderate" damage to a house on the other side of the chapel at 116 Chambersburg St. No one was home at the time of the blaze, said Chris Folster, a Gettysburg Fire Department lieutenant. Coffee house owner Jacob Schindel, who reported the blaze, said he woke up at 3:15 a.m. and heard what sounded like rustling leaves. The chapel was like a "bonfire," he said, adding he could "feel the heat." Folster said it was too early to speculate as to a cause, but he did not rule out the possibility of arson. The chapel has been embroiled in a controversy as the borough has ordered it to close because it does not meet standard building codes. Advocacy groups have offered legal assistance to try to keep the chapel open. John Wega, director of the U.S. Christian Commission in Gettysburg, which runs the chapel, was on the scene this morning with his family watching the blaze. The Ragged Edge was severely damaged in a January 2004 fire that began in a building at 114 Chambersburg St., the current site of the chapel. Streets in downtown Gettysburg were closed this morning as police and firefighters from 17 area companies were on the scene. Fox43 has a photograph and is reporting no one has been injured. I'm not familiar with the chapel. Is it a 'witness' structure, place of worship, a tourist attraction or something else? HankC
