Folks,
Just wanted to let you know that "The Battle Between the Farm Lanes: Hancock Saves the Union Center July 2, 1863" by Dave Shultz and Dave Wieck will be released by Ironclad Publishing in a week or two. See it at http://www.ironcladpublishing.com for a pre-order link at the bottom on the page. There's even a walking tour of the actions in the back of the book.
I had the opportunity to read the final manuscript of the book several months ago, and it's terrific!

Dave Shultz is a member of our round table here in Huntington Beach California. I have been lucky enough to hear him speak on Gettysburg several times. Once off the cuff as the scheduled speaker was lost , it was pouring down rain and we had a room full of people . Dave spoke for an hour with no notes off the top of his head.
This spring he will return to speak to our group about this book. He will also be at the Drum Barracks in Wilmington California to autograph is book June 16 along with Robin Young the author of For Love and Liberty , the story of Sullivan Balou and the Letter.

I think Hancock needs a new full biography. My boys in the 64th NY expressed universal respect for him in thier letters, diaries, and post war writings.
One issue I have never seen adressed is Hancock's quiet replacement of Caldwell post Gettysburg. At National Archives I found a hand written note from Hancock to Meade refering to Caldwell, dated March 23, 1864, which reads in part "Not fit to command a division.....lacks self reliance at critical times" Meade indorsed it "agreed" Does the book adress this?
I look foreward to reading this new book.

which is kind of ironic in that Caldwell's attack into the wheatfield with his division was done in a timely effiecient and effective manner (but then again I also think doubleday got the shaft too.)
