Being new to this discussion group, I'm impressed by the amount of books and reference material discussed.  I do want to compliment the participants on their breadth of knowledge on not only c.w. material but other  pieces of literature and history.  Alas, I'm depressed by the lack of shelf space alloted to our subject matter by the major book retailers (something mentioned in previous discussions).  I think it would be great to share our sources be it local book purveyors, web sites, etc. where we could obtain these materials, at resonable prices and hard to find titles.  I for one am a book junky and enjoy collecting books even though may not get around to reading it for quite a while.  Totally believe in the process of osmosis.  To begin the list, have lately been finding good deals on used books from amazon.com., amazingly in very good condition.

Doc:

I'll apologize in advance in the likely event you know of these:

I use abebooks.com to find a particular book -- almost always secondhand. This is an amalgamation of bookstores. If a book is new, it will be there -- at full price plus shipping. If it's old, someone will have it. Check it out. If you like it, free registration. Just picked up some 40s and 50s publications I wanted.

I like Edward R. Hamilton, Falls Village, CT 06031-5000. Here's where you find your bargains. This bookseller apparently buys up overstocks. All books are new. There is an online connection, but if you go direct mail (send in order form with check). Greatly reduced prices on other than new issues. If you go direct-mail (get on the mailing list) you can order a zillion books and still pay only $3.50 shipping. If you go online, the shipping is still cheap, but you'll pay per book. (You'll get a couple of newsprint catalogs monthly. You see something, order immediately.

If you sometimes hear of a book you want when it comes out. Order it through Barnes & Noble. First buy an annual membership ($25.00) which gets you a 10 percent discount and free shipping -- sometimes their advertised discount as well.

There are others out there and you'll certainly be getting suggestions (which I will gleefully add to my notebook).

Ole

Doc I am the woman with a van that drove cross country twice.  The first time I had the back seat of the van stacked high with books I bought everywhere I went.  The second time I mailed a box home from Memphis on the way east .  I had as many or more from there to the east coast and all the way back home .

I love to search the shelves at the National Parks and Battlefields.  Have found some gems there.  I think the young guy at Shiloh  was going to offer to carry my bag out to my car for me I had such a stack.

The first trip I was not only buying books for me I was buying historical books on the Colonial times, Revolution and Civil War for the school where I taught first grade and the school in Boston area where my sister in law works for the library.

I use Amazon.com used books quite a bit for my Civil War books.  I bought a big pile of Mountain men books from the Autry Museuem  in L.A. but they are full price and expensive.

I actually had a friend the other day ask me if I actually had any furniture or was I using books covered with blankets since she knew I have so many books.

My students use to call me Book Woman.  When my mother died I vowed to fund our school library with much needed books.  I started with the idea of 500 dollars worth , then went to 500 books, then ended up  donating around 2,000 books in my mother's name.  She was the reader.  Each book had a little red apple on the spine.  I loved sitting in the library seeing all those little apples.  I know she would have loved it too.

By the way I never pass up a bookstore when I am traveling.  I am headed to the Aspects of War on the Water West Coast Civil War Conference in the morning.  I am sure I will pick up at least four or five more books.

Susan
