I am researching Lt & Capt John Flynn 0f Co. D & H. Does anyone know of why 21 officers of the 63rd resigned in March of 1862 (10th or 13th day)? Also, Flynn who was supernumery in June of 1863 is listed as recruiting in New York for a new company in January 1864 for 20 days, but never seems to have served after June of 1863. Any ideas or info? Joe Maghe

Seems there was some kind of shake-up at that time. Maybe coincidence but I notice the exact date you mention in the below: The original companies of the regiment were recruited in New York City, portions of Companies A and E, however, came from Boston, Mass., and Company K — Faugh-o-Ballagh — from Albany; new Company C was recruited principally at Brooklyn, the other new companies mostly in New York City. The regiment left the State November 28, 1861; served in the Irish, Meagher's, Brigade, Sumner's Division, Army of the Potomac, from November 30, 1861; in same, 2d, Brigade, Richardson's 1st Division, 2d Corps, Army of the Potomac, from March 13, 1862, and, commanded by Col. James D. Brady, it was honorably discharged and mustered out June 30, 1865, at Alexandria, Va. During its service the regiment lost by death, killed in action, 8 officers, 70 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, 7 officers, 72 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 1 officer, 94 enlisted men; total, 16 officers, 236 enlisted men; aggregate 252; of whom 31 enlisted men died in the hands of the enemy.

The 20+ officers resigned due to problems with their initial commander Colonel Enright. He had asked for the resignation of five officers (McCafferty, Tobin, Fennon, Gleeson & Carty) and was consequentially removed himself (this may be when the other officers also resigned). John Burke of the 37th NY replaced him as Colonel, and Lt Colonel Fowler of the 63rd also tried for the Colonelcy with a letter to the Governor. Fowler claimed he had a letter recommending him for the position that was signed by all but 4 of the regiment's officers. At one time Enright seemed to be appointed to be reinstated... this may also be the circumstance that prompted the resignation of the officers. None the less, Burke was in command and recommended that 23 officers be reinstated.
