Agreed...

If one has absolutely nothing else to say, he/she can always dredge up this old dead hoss and beat it around some more

I know I'm going to get slammed for this, but here's what I find disturbing:

In a pivotal 4 years of our history, filled with real-life characters both admirable and despicable, with real battles and campaigns great and small , with political intrique like never seen before or since, with heartbreak and trauma unprecedented....a large portion of the Civil War community lowers their expectations for a movie to some piece of fictional drek. For some reason I find that sad.

I agree with most of what you say. My disagreement is that I don't believe it is a LARGE portion of the ACW community that fixates on this, but rather a very small segment.

I agree with both of you . I think Ed is right Javal it is a small segment of the community that fixates on this drek as you called it. I did not get interested in the Civil War by reading a piece of fiction . My interest started with a battlefield and then another and another. From the battlefields I started reading histories of the battlesfields I visited and the men who fought there. I did finally listen to Killer Angels on tape to see what it was all about. I was not impressed. I have read Gone with the Wind and listened on Tape to Cold Mountain. GWTW was in high school. I would still much rather read , visit or watch videos about real people and places , battles etc.
Please Joe kill this thread.

There is a portion of the CW community, notably reenactors, who somehow think its their responsibility to support the GB/GAG/LFM film trilogy because a number of their members got to be in the films.  When GAG was being produced, reenactors were encouraged to work on the project for nothing in order to help make "the most accurate CW film ever made".  For too many reenactors, it was all about face-time and being seen in a movie, not about the real history.  For some, having another opportunity to be a film is what drives them to want LFM to be made.

Susan, I don't think the movies are totally worthless. I know that as a young lad of about 9 I went to see Gettysburg in the theaters with my Dad. I was absolutely facinated and immediately after began learning everything I could about the war. Ultimately, Gettysburg is the reason I am working toward my PhD in American history. Now, I like to think that I am well read enough to understand the problems with the portrayal of Gettysburg and Gods and Generals on film, but everyone needs a spark that starts their passion for the ACW. That spark for me was a flawed movie. Cheers!

What frustrates me is that a really good movie could have been done. Something as well acted and as cinematicly pleasing as Glory. But alas we got Gettysburg & GAG. I know I left the theatre thinking that if I didn't know better I would think the CS had won the war. The movie should have ended after the flags at the beginning.

I agree with you Mark, there are some people who got interested in the Civil War through these movies. I probably never would have been a civil war buff if not for Gods and Generals, which I too saw when I was pretty young. I know the movies and books are conterversial but it's not like they are fiction, they're historical fiction which means it's pretty close to the truth, even though they may be one-sided in places.

it's not like they are fiction

Seems to me I find them in the fiction section of the bookstore and library.  That would make them FICTION.  Yes they use historical events as background for the story but they are very much fiction.  Some more than others.  The movies are even more fiction than the books .  The movie Gone with the Wind is different in many ways from the novel.   Novel=fiction.

If they got you interested in the Civil War this is a good thing. BUT after the orginal interest it is best to read NONficition biographies, battle books etc to find out what happened .

I realize these books are fiction, a lot of the material though is true, (even in Gone with the Wind where she describes what went on during Reconstruction). The authors put a lot of time into research to make them as close to the truth as possible.  I have read both fiction and nonfiction books about the war and I know what actually happened. But I have learned a lot about the war through fiction books.

I don't mean to start an argument about this. I just wanted to state my opinion. The real purpose of this topic is to discuss if LFM will ever be made, and I hope someday it is. :)

I know that writers imbellish history to make otherwise boring details more palateable, but Gods and Generals was a bit laborious and seemed to be a partial biography of General "Stonewall" Jackson. Something of the horrors of the war was skillfully revealed, but the picture was truncated and left too much of the history of the other Generals untold.

I had the feeling that the abrupt way the picture ended was designed to bring the pressure of public opinion to bear in an effort t force the making of the sequel "The Last Full Measure". I have copies of the films "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals", and I would welcome the sequel, but only if it would honor the men and women who gave so much of themselves to attempt to bring about a just resolution of the conflict. The complete trilogy would then be a treasure to own.

I've seen Gods and Generals as well as Gettysburg more than once. I had to read "Killer Angels" as a History major in undergrad school. I ALWAYS have felt that the release would have been better if done in sequence: Gods and Generals, Gettysburg and THEN Last Full Measure. I have to believe that Turner will find some way to make "The Last Full Measure" if for no other reason than to show what a lousy actor he is again. I agree with the post that noticed the difference in "balance" in Gods and Generals. The books were written in balanced fashion, so the movie violated the natural balanced flow of the books.
If the last movie doesn't get made I guess I'll have to satisfy myself by watching the last two CD's of the PBS Civil War series..., another "classic."

I thought the same thing about a "fourth" Bourne movie and it is in production with a different director. Hope springs eternal.

btw, I have read and studied about the Civil War since High School, focused on it as a History Major in undergrad school, lived for seven years near the Pea Ridge Battlefield in Arkansas and have visited several other sites including a recent visit to Vicksburg, which is incredible. Vicksburg is probably the most accurate Civil War Battlefield in America BECAUSE they had veterans still living help them lay out the troop placements, etc. Haven't made it to Gettysburg yet, but its on my bucket list. On top of this I am a descendant of Maj. General George E. Pickett, so I was "interested" with his depiction in the book "Killer Angels." His bitterness about the last charge is accurate.
