The American Civil War - Television Tropes & Idioms

I stumbled onto this lengthy offering online, and since I have often complained about Hollywood's portrayal of history, I decided to read it.

It turned out to be longer than some books that I have seen, and it contained a number of factual errors. (So I certainly don't endorse all of the author's facts or conclusions). But, it was more often right than wrong, and it was written in a sardonic style that appealed to me.

I found many parts of it to be amusing, such as the contention (Probably correct) that it was safer to fight a whole battle through than to be sent to an field hospital at any point of it. I was especially amused by the author characterizing a number of prominent figures as: "Badasses."

At any rate, those who would read this lengthy text should consider themselves to have been warned about some of its shortcomings. On the other hand, I expect that some would consider it to be entertaining reading.

TD, you sure you didn't stumble across someone's 8th grade report on the war that they decided was worth posting online?. Some of the terminology speaks more towards 8th grade or high school as what this was originally written for. "An Asskickin' Christmas," "Badass," "Took a Level in Badass," "Badass Beard," "Badass Bookworm," "Badass Grandpa," "Badass Mustache," "Badass Preacher," "Big Damn Heroes," "Cool Boat," "Cool Gun," "Cool Hat?" I mean these sound like you should be voting for a yearbook in senior year high school. I know we had categories like "Tallest," "Shortest," "Most Popular" "Best Car," "Most Musical," "Best Couple;" in all but the last it meant actually two votes cause you voted for the guy and girl that fit, the last was for a couple dating so just a single vote there. The categories from this one really remind me of my senior year in high school and voting in the categories I mentioned for then. And if I really wanted to bother I could find more yearbook-esque categories. It just doesn't feel as if it were written by someone out of junior high or high school.

Oh hey, bad news for all of us who that Jackson was wounded in battle and those wounds led to his death. Turns out he wasn't hit in battle at all but between battles. I'm guessing now it was some pickets on sentry duty one evening who saw him passing between camps and thought he was a Federal spy or scout. Guess he wasn't hit by men of the 18th NC during the evening hours on the first day of Chancellorsville because he was between the lines and the men mistook him and his companions as Federal cav. And that injury ended up becoming pneumonia while recovery from his arm being amputated. Guess we have egg on our combined faces now.

Like you said TD, errors.

Hellcat-

You can't say that you weren't warned.  ;)

You must admit that if it was written by an 8th grader, then it is a very knowledgeable 8th grader. I might have been more inclined to read ORs and similar correspondence if some of this kind of language had been used. Imagine if General Sherman had said, reporting the death of Bishop Polk: "We killed the Badass Preacher today."

Over the years I have read much about Mr. Lincoln and his humor. Some people liked it, while others (Such as General McClellan) didn't much appreciate it. However, it did amuse me to see Mr. Lincoln referred to as a : "Deadpan Snarker." Perhaps he would have had a comeback to that.

We can only imagine how the principals of that war would have reacted if they could have seen how people and events would be characterized a century and a half later.

No so sure I entirely agree there, TD. My folks have claimed that my 8th grade history teacher told them he turned over the class to me when we were studying the war because I knew more about it than he did after the years we in the South which allowed time to visit some of the sites from the war and my spending a lot of time reading Catton. I kinda doubt that though, to be honest, as you'd think you'd remember a teacher turning the entire class over to one of their students to teach a subject.

My junior year in high school I did a pamphlet on aspects of the war that I remember getting an A on and it didn't sound quite like this does. Would have been longer, think it ended up six to ten pages long and the original was close to twenty pages, if I hadn't had a computer crash and I lost everything I'd written forcing me to re-write as much as I could in a single night. But that was still a high school report and I'm sure it would sound like it was written by a high schooler today if I posted it.

Which is not to say high schoolers can't be knowledgeable on subjects.
