Johan .. Man you must put barnes and noble to shame with your civil war libary , when someone asks about a book you always seem to have it. I have two questions 1) How does the before mentioned wife with the Iron Skillet feel about your collection? 2) Can I come over and let my wife chat with yours and take a peak at some of those books?

Sure... bit of a hike this far north though. She's an addict as well. Her library is all on the domestic and fashion side of the war though. The library loves both of us as we're both regulars there. if I don't have it I can get it through the library.

What wonderful examples you both are to your daughter.  Does she have a book collection too?   The teacher in me is saying here are two role models for a young reader .  Parents that read and value books.  Good job Johan and Wife with Skillet!!!

Yep, the daughter has quite a collection. While she's only 6 I have no doubt she will follow in the family tradition of putting a book down to get out of bed and go to work in the morning.

Johan, my mother always said my brother and I were born with books in our hands.

My mother encouraged me to read and started me on my Civil War intrest by war letters written by, and books purchased by my great gerand father who was a proud menber of the GAR. When my sisters and I closed her estate I was allowed all the Civil war related books and documents. My most prized item however was a first edition of The Last of the Mohigians my mother had received for winning an oratory contest at her school when she was 12.  I also got several other first editions,Uncle Tom's Cabin, Gone With the Wind, I am ashamed I can't recall the others. We were not wealthy, but my mom always found a way to pay for books. She also got me hooked on American Heritage books. I still have the hard covered magazines for about six years in the mid to late '60s. My wife would like to see them leave, but I just can't bring myself to give them to the library.

If the time ever comes when you must give them up, J Harold, we'll hold a wake that will be quite literally crying in our beer.
