What ranks were elected and what ranks were appointed by superior officers in the Army of Virginia? When did the election of officers stop?

depends on the army..IMO
US elected company grade thru WW 1
Field grade were all appointed union andconfederate I believe

Actually regimental officers were elected in the ANV until early 62 when Lee put an end to it for very obvious reasons.
