JDC I know I have seen the picture , I just can't remember which book it is in .  I just looked in one and it was not there.  I will continue to look.  It may be in my huge William Davis Belle Wiley Civil War photography book.  I will look there next .

Good luck in your search.

Nope it wasn't in the Civil War photography book , but it was fun looking though the book again.  I need to spend more time on that book.

JDC I found the picture without the child in a book at the Drum today still looking . I know I saw the picture just recently.  I wish I knew where I saw it .  Might have been in one of the Civil War Magazines I subscribe to as there was one that was all about Custer.  I wlll look for that one soon.

Susan

It drives me crazy when I know I have seen something or know where something should be and it isn't there.  I can picture the picture so clearly and realized oday I had never seen the one without the child .  I love the search.

Hee-hee Susan, it looks like you and I were  looking thru that book at the same time!  I know I've seen that picture as well- if I can't find it in one of my photography books, I'll take a look when I'm at the local University this weekend.  If Mr. Duncan joined this group to find that picture, we must do our best to reward him by finding it!

" Found several of Custer during The War - handsome devil."

And he knew it - the guy is famous for his vanity, among other things.  But, he travelled the frontier with a pack of Scottish Deerhounds (ever seen the pictures of him standing outside his tent with them?), so I have a soft spot for him - wonderful dogs!!!!!

JDC,

It just occurred to me, are you using the word "ambrotype" in your search?  That, and perhaps "tintype", may really narrow down the field.  But, I'm guessing that this was an ambrotype....

Joanie did you see the picture?  It is kind of cool picture ,  It had stuck in my mind when I saw it .  It was also fresh as the magazine wasn't that old .   I am so glad I found it .  I love this kind of search.

I sure did, Susan, plain as day!  Way to Go, Girl!!!!!!  I'm so glad you found it, too;  I was starting to get a mite obsessed (to tell the truth, I'm still looking because I KNOW Ive seen it somewhere, more than once!)  Now, thanks to you,  I'll sleep tonight, instead of jumping up and looking somewhere every few minutes, LOL!  Great JOB!

Joanie
