Good post Basecat, you capture my feelings for the film too. Gettysburg I thought did a good job of capturing the humanity of the people, while G&G made them look like icons and too stiff. The screenplay and dialogue was horrible. I really wanted to like it very much based on the subject but just couldn't.

I think part of the problem with "G & G" was that it had far too broad an era to cover, even for a significantly longer film. "Gettysburg" focused on four days, and the people involved in the events of them. "G & G" tried to shove in events from secession to Chancellorsville, a period of over two years. I think this makes for a film that's difficult to establish characters that people care about. Although I liked "G & G" it didn't have near the effect on me that "Gettysburg" did. Moments such as the late Richard Jordan's powerful scene where Lo Armistead reflects on his friendship with Hancock are absent from "G & G". This is one of only many scenes from "Gettysburg" that stay with me, and are sorely missed in "G & G".

Hello all, I have been reading this and thought I would add to it. Glory and Gettysburg are great movies. While Gettysburg had it problems with being correct, it was still a great movie. It did have heart, and a few better story then Gods and Generals. But like it was said on here, there is no way to span that much time. Gettysburg only had to deal with a few days not years like G+G. I would have loved to see the Valley or Sharpsburg in G+G. I do still love G+G, but I do find my self scanning past some of the slow parts. I also look for me and friends who are in the film. And I still hope that the full 6+ hours version of G+G will come out. But I also feel that should the movie Last Full Measure ever get made, Maxwell needs to be far far away from anything that has to do with him near the screenplay. But someone said that Ride With The Devil was great. I dont see that at all. It was at best ok. But this new movie CSA looks like another attempt to bash the Confederate flag and anyone who owns one. I have not seen the movie, and I am sure that I will once it is on DVD. And with the film company that is putting it out, I am sure that will be in a few weeks. Now dont get me wrong, I love the what if's, and it is one of them things we talk about at reenactments. And I would love to see something put out on what if the south had won, and have it done by people who dont seem to be stuck on "Evil Whitie" and the slave issue. They even did a Twilight Zone on the Civil War and what if. And again it sucked, and made it again seem that the South is evil, and North all wanted to free slaves. The CSA movie is going to just be one of them movies that is there and gone. Last edited on Thu Nov 3rd, 2005 10:05 pm by anv57regnc |

I would LOVE to see a well made film based solely on the battle of Antietam. It's one of those almost "forgotten" parts of the conflict where the average person is concerned.

I guess this thread is no longer about the original topic but has become about Civil War movies in general. Especially Gods and Generals. My biggest fear on the original topic is that this movie is going to be something that we're going to see a lot of backlash for years to come and history as it was completely forgotten. On the subject of Gods and Generals, I was more than a little let down. I'd read the book and was hoping for something closer to the book. Yes, I knew there was a large timespan to cover and things would get cut out. But it felt like they glossed over too much and only had a couple of battles they really wanted. I wanted to see a progression, from before the war through the early months of the war and then through Chancellorville and onto the march to Gettysburg. With all the major characters of the book really having a focus. Would have made a longer movie, maybe two movies, but it would have been worth it to me.

I see that this film is in selected cities today, March 1. Must admit, I'm somewhat curious and will most likely see the film when available on DVD, or perhaps if it makes it to theaters locally.

I understand the movie is supposed to be a mix of satire and what-if's, but from the reviews I have read (it's not showing here in Missouri) everything he is presentinig is basically along the lines of "the south was wrong and evil". He even goes so far as to tie the CSA in with Hitler and having the CSA make a pre-emtive attack on Japan instead of the other way around. I think what he just totally forgets is that even IF the south had won, they were not bent on dominating the Union. All the events that took place in history since then would have still been done under the banner of the Union most likely and the CSA would be an entirely seperate country (or individual states). Instead he portrays the south as aggressors, bent on domination, slavery continuing (which would have died not long after the war anyway) and a country basically run by the KKK. This is a good example of a man misleading people and feeding them fals information. The country already is is dire need of better education about the Civil War. Instead we get garbage like this.

If it ever shows here I will post again my thoughts. If I go by what was said to be in the movie (the bit about the Nazis, attacking Japan, etc) then I fail to see how that can be productive at all. What dialog could possibly come from "assuming" that a CSA driven government would support Nazi Germany or have any desire or motivation to attack Japan or to just blatantly assume that slavery would still exist in the 20th century? I think all it would produce is more confusion over matters that have already been muddied by time (slavery would have died out regardless of the war, the confederates were not evil men or even right or wrong, they were a people who fought for principle, no different than the north, etc etc). What we need is more factual movies, documentaries and media presentations and not more presentations that will confuse the already confused. Again, I will either substantiate my position after seeing the movie or acknowledge my misgivings.

hm, somehow I don't see Spike Lee and mockumentary format mixing well. and what a broad idea, you could go anywhere with that. should be interesting, though I won't hold my breath for something fantastic.
