Does anyone know of a good website that has detailed OoBs, including troop numbers, artillery battery composition etc? For example, I am researching a more detailed OoB for the two assaults on Fort (Battery) Wagner in July 1863, epecially the second assault.

Wikipedia under "Lists of Orders of Battles" has orders of battle for many periods of history and quite a few AMerican Civil War battles. I do not know if these lists cover the battles that interest you or if they are as detailed as you might wish. Check it out though. It might be a start.

Thanks, Guys. Have already looked at the Wikipedia sources, which do need to be cross-referenced for sure.

I am after ones like this one for Antietam: http://aotw.org/oob.php, into which you can drill down.

It would be great to find a site that consolidates OoB info for at least all the major battles. I do have quite a few books, of course, (eg Shelby Foote, Stephen Sears etc) but they don't always go to the level of detail I am after.

Ignore Wikpedia... try  http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/pottery/1080/index.htm

Not 100% accurate but pretty darn good.  Has a tendency to omit Regt's on the outskirts of a battle.

And while not the OOB's you are asking for this is an absolute must in your links; Dyers Compendium.  http://www.civilwararchive.com/regim.htm

Good Luck

Have seen no OoB carried to the detail you'd like, Stoneveld. You might have to do it yourself. Download a good one and convert to a word processing document. Then build on it using your books, Battles & Leaders, and other sources to provide the details you want.

When I'm reading a book on a battle, I keep a hard copy of the OoB next to me. I can make notes in the OoB and update it later. For example, I've never seen one that identifies guns in a battery, but a book might.

For Antietam, there is an old document (1942) on the artillery present. Perhaps there are similar documents for other major battlefields.

Ole

Virtual Antietam has an extensive OOB and is a good website for the battle which includes excellent maps.

Best website I know of for Antietam is Brian Downey's at http://aotw.org/  . I'd be surpised if there's not an in-depth OOB there.

Gotcha Doc C. The oob is at http://aotw.org/oob.php . Looks like you can drill down pretty deep.

Thanks for the plug to the Antietam OOB, Joe!

As you drill down you'll also find links to commanding officers (most all of them, including battle replacements, I think), artillery weapons, battle maps, after-action reports, unit histories, etc.  I don't have strength or casualty figures for most units.  Except in a few well documented cases, these are not actually known, for sure, and I don't generally publish guesses or estimates.

If you want the best for Gettysburg [argghh, I said the G word] try Eicher's Ultimate OOB:

http://www.gdg.org/Research/OOB/EicherOOB.htm

Regards,
Brian

Stoneveld,

It is very rare for an author or a website to have a truly complete OOB, ie. numbers, losses, armaments, arty gun types. It takes a great deal of effort to compile and the information doesn't always exist.  Luckily, for what you're looking for, Stephen Wise has a very detailed OOB in his book Gate of Hell.  It is a very fine book and copies are fairly easy to find.

Thank you for the links Johan. :) I've been looking for something like this for awhile.
