Ole,
My understanding vis a vis the expansion of slavery is this... Senators were elected by the legislatures of the individual states...slave states could be expected to elect senators to look after their interests..likewise non slave states. So long as a balance was maintained, all was well...when events threatened to tip the scale to allow no more slave states, then there would be no more pro slave senators and the balance beam would be forever tipped away from the south and thereby negate their votes and representation.. It would be impossible to stop northern meddling in southern states affairs with the votes to force their point of view.

Again, this became a states rights issue... We can't forget the state legislature's power to elect US Senators.
