My family also has soldiers who fought on both sides.. Grandmother's family from S. Alabama was loaded with Confederate soldiers including my gggg uncle killed at Petersburg and gggg grandfather who jined up in 61 and went home in '65 with nary a scratch.
Maternal Grandfather's family from NW Alabama had both confederates and Yankees in the bloodline... it was literally brother against brother Confederates in the 4th Alabama, yankees in a Wisconsin unit..

My Uncle's grandfather (husband of my mother's sister) was the flag of truce bearer at Appamattox and later governor of Alabama. During his administration 1892 to '96, he returned to Appamattox, doug a sycamore and planted it on the grounds of the Alabama state capitol..It still grows and is gorgeous now.
