My mother encouraged me to read and started me on my Civil War intrest by war letters written by, and books purchased by my great gerand father who was a proud menber of the GAR. When my sisters and I closed her estate I was allowed all the Civil war related books and documents. My most prized item however was a first edition of The Last of the Mohigians my mother had received for winning an oratory contest at her school when she was 12. I also got several other first editions,Uncle Tom's Cabin, Gone With the Wind, I am ashamed I can't recall the others. We were not wealthy, but my mom always found a way to pay for books. She also got me hooked on American Heritage books. I still have the hard covered magazines for about six years in the mid to late '60s. My wife would like to see them leave, but I just can't bring myself to give them to the library.
