Red Badge of Courage/Paths of Glory.
Guess you have make subcategories - war action, psychological, etc. and then make your selections because just simply best war movie is rather too large.
Like all of the above mentioned films. Interesting about Horse Soldiers, it was filmed where I grew up in La and remember the buzz of Wayne & Holden being there for filming. It's always been comical to me the mentioning of the union troops being captured and sent to Andersonville. It would be months later that Winder would send his son to Ga for the selection of the prison site. Thus Andersonville didn't exist at the time of the cavalry raid.
