While I am familiar with the characteristics of the .223 or 5.57mm round as well as the characteristics of both the m16 variants that shoot the military version and principally the Ruger mini 14 that is chambered for the civilian version ( and they ARE different), and the weight advantage of the 5.57 vs the 7.62 I mentioned the piece because it represents the state of the art today...discounting the Buck Rogers stuff that is on the design boards and in testing now.

furthermore I understnd what you are saying about letting the situation dictate the weapon required...just like a golfer has several clubs in his bag.. the discussion however was centering around the technological advances in waaponry from the beginning to the end of the WBTS. I maintained and still maintain that the rifled musked, coupled with a minnie made for a HUGE technological leap.
