  You asked about military units formed in Clay /Cherokee Counties in NC. Here are some resources that might be of interest:

North Carolina Civil War Regiments and Battles- This discusses Western NC units. It includes some that were recruited in part by the counties mentioned above. (Clay coming from Cherokee in 1861). (See 2nd NC Cav, 6th NC Cav, 25th NC Inf, 29th NC Inf, 62nd NC Inf, etc.).

NCGenWeb Project - Cherokee County- a history of the 39th NC, probably listing your relatives.

Clay Co., NC USGenWeb Genealogy- These folks should be able to tell you what went on in Clay county. It includes Census/ Marriage Records and other good stuff.

  You didn't ask for info on the Ledfords, but I will send some in the next posting just in case there is something that you haven't seen.
