It seems that people's opinion on the legality of secession always comes down to partisanship. If you side with the Confederacy, it's legal. Side with the Union, it's illegal.

It seems that even the best arguments do not sway many people one way or another.

One of the last things I can add is that if secession were in fact legal or at least debatable, why did South Carolina (since they were the first to secede), not "apply" for secession through what, I would think, would be the proper channels: The Federal Government? They simply left. As did the other 10 states.
