More importantly, he should also understand their ambitions and failings, especially with regard to their relationships to brother officers. There is no point, for example, in entrusting B to an endeavour if in so doing it will cause resentment with C. Learning loads from this thread and its parent! * (I hate the term 'human resources' and am trying to avoid it)
