I guess I was using Grant and Lee as reference points. Both had good relations with their respective governments and were more successful because of it. I was not referring to the so called "political" generals like Butler and Banks. Very few of the politicians turned soldiers did very well. I was also not including the generals who tried to use politics to further their causes like Hood and Hooker. In almost every case this resulted in problems for the general doing the politicking, for the army they were trying to lead and for their governments.
